I make a really nice trifle for christmas and parties which really goes down a treat.

A nice choc swiss roll preferably with real cream and not buttercream or a nice chocolate cake or if really good then make my own.

tinned orange segments or manderins in juice not syrup.

Chocolate custard or normal if you dont like chocolate

fresh cream

tia maria liquer

choc flake.

cut your cake into pieces and layer over the base of the dish. sprinkle over your orange segments and then pour over your tiamaria so that it soaks into the orange and sponge. crush a choc flake and sprinkle over everything.

Add your custard which should have cooled first and leave to set.

add on top your double or whipped cream and then decorate with crushed flake.

For an alternative change your orange segments for cherries or black cherries and use kirsh or cherry brandy.

This recipe does not require jelly though should you wish to use some then use the relevant flavoured jelly though it can spoil it and make it a bit mushy.

This sounds delicious! I Might try it on the weekend. Thanks for posting it. I like the fact that it does not contain jelly. x
i do a very similar one which takes minutes to put together (no jelly to set) and always goes down well. these are the layers i use, from the bottom up:
choc cake soaked in cointreau
approx. 4 bananas, sliced into a drop of lemon juice
dessicated coconut liberally sprinkled over
quantity of good quality ready-made custard
whipped cream
5 flakes crumbled over the top

you can substitute any of the ingredients if you don't like them.
