Plus some colours dont suit many people (like yellow for instance)
jewel colours tend to suit a lot of people. like emerald, ruby, sapphire.
Also it depends of whether you want to hire or purchase dresses. For purchase, Debenhams can be good value so perhaps start taking a look at their ranges for ideas of styles and colour.

My God-daughter is getting married next year and has got her bridesmaids dresses from BHS. They are burgundy, and for the younger bridesmaids, burgundy and cream. I think they are really nice, but why not have a look around, especially with your chief bridesmaid/matron of honour and see what you think?
I got married last year in white and decided that I wanted my bridesmaids, who were all children, to wear lilac. Unfortunatly it only suited one of the five, so they tried a few different colours on and settled on gold.
We got them from BHS and there was a lot of choice colourwise so you could try there just to get some idea of what will suit people
