I'm at a two day conference in Skipton next week and will have an afternoon free. I've never been to Yorkshire before is there a 'must see' I could do or will a drive through the dales/moors be the best way to spend my afternoon.
TIA

How about a visit to 'Saltaire'?

It was an indusrial village built by Sir Titus Salt, to house his workers in the woolen mill there. Wonderful set out streets that are named after his wife and children.
Salts Mill is now luxury appartments and individual units, but some part of it has been turned into a museum, and there is a restaurant/cafe.
It is quite close to the river and Leeds to Liverpool canal. It's set in beautiful surroundings and should be quite nice at this time of year with all the different colours on the trees.

:-)
Skipton itself is very nice. Grassington, Howarth, Pateley Bridge are all worth a look

Thanks kjc - I don't want to waste an opportunity to get a 'feel' for yorkshire, being on the South Coast I don't get a chance to come north much (mind you everything is 'up north' for me here.)

kjc is right about Saltaire - a great place to visit. My mum's cousin had a house there for many years and I wish I had visited it more now.
bradford is lovely in october
I can't believe no-one's mentioned the obvious thing to visit whilst in Skipton!

Bradford is hardly an example of typical Yorkshire countryside.

I only go to Bradford and Keighley when I have no choice.
you didnt sense my sarcasm did you ethel. its like saying clacton is holiday hotspot in feb
I did get the sarcasm, but as Hellyon doesn't know Yorkshire at all, he or she may not have.
I had a relative that lived in Saltaire.
It's a beautiful place and well worth a visit.
It's now a world heritage centre and is mentioned in lots of travel books, and even Bill Bryson gave it a mention in his 'Notes on a Small Island.'

:-)
Robin hoods bay near`Whitby is beautiful and dramatic, we often go there.

Robin Hoods Bay is a bit too far to go for the afternoon from Skipton.

Robin Hood's Bay is indeed very beautiful - but it's nearly 100 miles from Skipton
If you don't mind driving a bit further Harrogate is a remarkable town with beautiful public gardens, fantastic shops and lovely old buildings. A must is afternoon tea at Betty's on Parliament Street overlooking Montpellier gardens, the cakes are delicious. If you like walking and the outdoors try Bolton Abbey Priory and church. This time of year the trees on the neighbouring estate are fantastic colours and there are wonderful walks by the river but make sure you have the right footware. If you are a shopaholic Boundary Mills, Colne is a unique shopping experience they have everything from clothes, luggage, perfume, furnishings, cookware etc. and a large M&S clearance outlet. All the prices are reduced I have had some fantastic bargains and they also have a coffee shop or restaurant. Haworth is also a lovely village and is quaint, a must if you are interested in The Bronte's is The Parsonage.Hope you have a lovely time Hellyon
