controversial advertising

whats your opinion on shock tactics advertising effective or offensive ?

I'm a smoker and I'm ashamed to admit (really really ashamed as my uncle died of lung cancer)... and I hope other smokers will come forward to confess with me please ... I turn the channel over. Except for the one with the babies that are sleeping with smoke coming out of their mouths and noses, I feel strongly about not smoking aroung children and non-smokers. I think the drink and drive ad's are effective and I hope that they make drivers think twice, I'm not a driver but they make me more angry and drink drivers and more likely to take keys off people or shop them!

I have always believed that human nature takes over in these circumstances, and that the people at whom the ads are aimed simply don't think the message is for them. Let's face it, if they did, then smokling / drinking / speeding and similar would all be wiped out overnight.

I rather think it's effective. Did anyone ever see the anti drink/driving ads they used in Eire? They were shown on Tarrant on TV. They were haunting but reduced their figures for such offences.
