Does anyone know the law about what time in the morning is the ealiest a dog is allowed to start barking, as my neighbour lets her 2 dogs out at 6.30am, one of which immediately starts barking, which straight away wakes myself & husband up & winds us up so much. It barks for about 1-3 minutes, but it's enough to drive you mad. Then when she comes home from work at around 5ish she lets them out again & starts the whole thing off again (although it's not so noticeable at that time of day & does'nt worry or disturb us). Please help!!

Why are you laughing no-know? If you had to live next door to a constantly barking dog you might not find it so funny. My neighbours have a dog that never shuts up,I love animals and would never harm any but I have harboured thoughts of what i'd like to do to the owners who leave the poor thing on its own all day.

Constant barking can constitute a noise nuisance but 1-3 minutes when the dogs are let out in the morning is far from constant, just about enough time for them to relieve themselves.

The only thing I can suggest is that you have a word with your neighbour and ask if she can let them out a little later as it wakes you every morning.

As for the dogs barking for a few minutes when she lets them out in the evening, well this is totally natural too.

1 to 3 minutes is hardly excessive barking is it?

Daffy, with respect we don't know for sure that the dogs are alone all day, just because they are let out when the wife comes home at 5.00pm. When I worked (part time) my dogs were alone for a few hours but I still let them out when I came home (and a neighbour called in during the time I was out.

I can't imagine getting upset because of dogs having a bark for a couple of minutes and wake me up. My neighbour regularly revs his car engine up before setting off for work at 6.45am. It often wakes me, but it's part of life.

I do know for a fact that my neighbour leaves her dog alone all day as it only ever barks when alone,never when she is in.I have lived here for a few years so I know the neighbour's routine very well.I don't know about tess's neighbour,I was just commenting on my own experience.I would be happy if my neighbours dog only barked occasionally but it doesn't it is non-stop!
Its funny that most people will defend a dog barking and annoying people,but when it comes to cats doing what comes naturally it is fine to want to harm the cat(or cat owner).I know a dog barking is a natural thing,but for one to bark all day means it is distressed at being left alone.If you can't make arrangements for your dog to be cared for while you are out all day then don't get one!

I know how you feel generally, but we really don't know the circumstances of the dogs in this question. But you must admit 1 to 3 minutes barking when they are let out at 6.30 and again in the evening at 5.30 is hardly reason to complain!!! It seems quite normal to me.

I get heavy lorries full of squealing pigs going past from about 5.00 a.m. every morning and they wake me up. Perhaps I should complain to the depot!

Not dogs but to show I empathise fully with you.

i have difficulty getting a decent sleep at times.

There is a window cleaner who starts his rounds at 6 in the morning -so he can finish at 1-2pm to go to the pub -drives me mad as I cant get back to sleep.

I have a neighbour who instead of dragging his wheely bin round the back of my house and then the front at even 10pm he does it at 6.30 once a week -wakes me up.

There is a wee ***** of a skateboarder who cos i am on a slight descent comes from his pals at any time between 11pm and 2am and trundles past my windon and wakens me up yeah I do roar at him but he is half a mile away on a roll by this time.
O and theres the parents who cant just say 'bye' to their kids -given I havent had much sleep cos of the aformentioned -and have to too toot toot their horns -one would be enough but they all think they have to it at the back of 8.

Its like a bleeding dripping tap -it drive me insane so if I had that daily I would be more demented than I am currently.

I feel so sorry for you and I would have to say something and they didnt co-operate then i would have to instigate some lawful noise nuisance myself and see how they liked it.

Dogs are dogs - they cannot tell the time! They need to go out when they need to go out and they are just excited. Most people's dogs bark and 6.30 a.m. is most working peoples getting up time. My neighbours dogs bark a lot in the early morning but it is just part of nature and together with the owls at night, the birds singing in summer and most other things in nature - it makes me smile.
I don't think you will get much assistance from council regarding it - I bet they won't see it as a nuisance either - they are more concerned with people being kept awake with loud music in the early hours than with someone who has 1-3 minutes interruption in their sleep. Sorry:-(

Tess, I am afraid animals for humane reasons have to be transported early from the farms down to wherever they might be going, especially in the summer. I think you must accept that we can't all expect 8 hrs unbroken sleep. Life has to go on and there are things that happen between when we go to bed and wake up. I have sugar beet harvesters and lorries working all night in the autumn and pea viners, and combine harvesters. Life can't stop because of me.

6.30am is not the middle of the night, a couple of minutes of barking is not very long. You would have cause to complain if the dogs were kennelled outside and barked all night on and off, but you really do not have anything to complain about.

Sorry, I don't feel sorry for you at all.

Be a different story if you couldnt sleep then were rudely awakened by anything -be it dogs and then couldnt get back to sleep again and this perpetuated until you were a zombie and had to take drugs so you could sleep through it..

Bad craic when it could be avoided -suits them to early bed along with the dogsand early rise along with the dogs-i think its selfish to have dogs howling at that time in the morning.

I would and could put up with interspesent (i know its a sp? lol) noise -what neighbour woudnt but you abolutety wouldnt if it were you listening to that every morning -why bark in the first place -is it not sufficient to just nuzzle up or 'wheech' at their owners so say they need fed./out.

Why does everone else have to be part of this ritual?.

I think its bad training -no need to bark -that could be addressed.

Dris, I rarely sleep for more than an hour at a time. I am the worlds worse sleeper and if I do manage to go to sleep the slightest thing wakes me. However, I understand that's my problem not anybody else's. I can't expect the world to stop because I haven't slept well.

Different if you get woken up in the early hours of the morning by barking dogs - but 6.30am is a time at which many people have to be up and about, and a dog barking for a only couple of minutes does not constitute a nuisance. 6.30am is not particular early to be up and about if you are working.

And sorry, you can't stop a dog barking. (howling was not mentioned) You can stop a dog barking continuously, but I'm afraid that when a dog goes out first thing in the morning it is instinctive to bark. My dogs wake me by 'wheeching' (a nice word and new to me ;o) ). But when they go out they run around and have a short bark before being called back in. I am not selfish enough to let them stay outside barking.

My dogs do not bark at all during the night unless they are disturbed.

They bark anyway because my neighbour is revving up

My Mum & Dad's dog (who I adored), only used to bark if anyone rang the doorbell & even that got on my wick - let alone be awakened by it!

Our daughter & other half, aquired a three year old retired greyhound five weeks ago, & they've only heard her bark four times since they've had her. Now that's what I call a magical dog, bless her!
