Dell vs PC World vs PCSpecialist
2 Answers
I am looking to replace my 8yr old desktop PC with something up to date. I have no need for a laptop and, in any case, I reckon that a desktop offers better features for the same money. I will use the PC for web browsing, emails, spreadsheets (Excel*), graphics (PowerPoint*), documents (Word*), digital photo editing (PSP) and just possibly video editing but definitely not for music or video downloads or online gaming (I am an OAP). (* = or Lotus / OpenOffice equivalent).
I have a budget of 500 and rather like the look of the Dell Inspiron 530 or 540 or the equivalent from PCSpecialist. Does anyone have any comment regarding the relative merits of the various suppliers mentioned above?
I am also considering upgrading my old, slow dial-up internet to Broadband. As I am not interested in a laptop I don't see the necessity for wireless. The computer will reside in my study. I am reluctant to switch phone suppliers from BT as I have a 18866 deal which is very cost effective.
Again, does anyone have any recommendations regarding Broadband providers? I am currently considering BT, AOL or Tiscali.

The Dell Inspiron will suit your needs very well, but I think the model has been superceded.
Just make sure whatever you buy has a minimum of 2gb RAM to cope with Vista. Go for the biggest screen you can afford too.
