Got loads of paper back books I don't want anymore (good condition) but don't really want to throw in the bin. Charity shops don't seem to accept books. What's the best way to do something useful with them?

I am pretty sure that Oxfam take books, so I wouldn't give up on the Charity shop front.
What about a car boot sale, or ebay ?
Check with www.abebooks.com to see if any of your books have any value before giving them away, though.
Local groups often have fundraisers when they have book sales (Ladies'sCircle , Women's Guild etc)
Or you could have a look for local second hand bookshops...they wouldn't give you much for them, but at least you would know that they had not been wasted.
Your local doctors' surgery might welcome a few for their waiting room.
Good luck. :-))
Another good site is www.readitswapit.co.uk, you list the books you have for swapping and can request books you would like on the 'wishlist', only costs the price of posting.
hi there

the R.S.P.C.A will always take books or in fact anything that helps us in our work with animals
See if your local Rotary Club or Round Table has a need of them. In our town they have a shop where they sell nothing but books.

OR

If you have a Barter Books near you they take them and give you credits towards replacing them with others to read.
what about the website freecycle
If they are in good condition, your local library may accept them as donations - some do, some don't
