hard brke pedal on a peugeot 206

i have a 2002 peugeot 206 1.4 auto and recently when first driving the car the brake peddle is hard to push and the brakes fail to come on straight away.
After a small while the pedal pressure softens and the brakes work properly.
I have checke dthe brake fluid and this is within the correct range (min-max).
Any other checks I can do or is it a garage job?

I had a Peugeot which did exactly the same...all of a sudden the brake pedal would go hard and the brakes barely worked...
Normally I would do all my own repairs, but at the time I was just too busy with work.
I did something I said I would never do again, and gave the car to the local peugeot franchise.
They changed the servo ... and that solved it..!
