I think that's a bit harsh gobbledegee, you could say hyp44 is using initiative to gather opinions, and where better than from a forum like this with such a broad spread of members.
Back to the question:
Any society whether primitive, developed, civilised or unrefined, need to develope and maintain cohesive behaviour to remain stable. This has usually been in the form of a religious establishment which set the standards, and acted as role models (maybe not so much now).
On a day to day basis, we're then influenced by parents and peers etc ideally acting within these guidelines.
It's interesting looking at gang culture which is a society within a society, but still need strict codes of behaviour, perhaps even more so than the wider society.
To maintain stability we as individuals have to be influenced by others around us, and to some degree conform. This does not mean mindless acceptance of everything, but as individuals we cannot just do entirely our own thing with disregard to others, so we have to be influenced by those around us for ourselves and our society to survive.

Only if you look at them and respect them for who they are and what they do and you know that the advice they offer is a result of hard earned experience. . We are all given an education these days and once we start experiencing the real world for ourselves our thinking processes should kick in and give us the ability to start reasoning these issues out for ourselves.
As for allowing our political leaders to influence us - you must be joking !! You mean the people who fiddled their expenses at the cost of the taxpayer and who used just about every trick in the book to line their own pockets ? Come on !!
