Choosing hypnotherapist
6 Answers
Has anyone any experience of finding and choosing a hypnotherapist?
There are loads in Yellow Pages, but how do I choose one?
I don't know anybody who has used one so I can't get a recommendation.
I want to try to find a method of overcoming periods of anxiety, particularly those times when the guy next door plays his crappy techno music (boom, boom, boom base beat) loudly and I want to put a hammer through his music system and wrap a golf club round his neck!

Environ health will (or should do) check these noise levels and will hopefully deal with it.
Do not just chose a hypnotherapist out of the yellow pages - there are many people who practice without the proper qualifications. Check with your local doctor or health service to see if they can recommend someone suitabily qualified. Always look for the persons qualifications as well. Not sure where you live so cant give any recommendations.
Good luck.

You've had some very good advice there from 20SC.
If you're determined you need to find someone you connect & feel relaxed with and all good hypnotherapists should give an initial free consultation.
I looked into hypnotherapy last year after both of my sons went for help to give up smoking and were successful. I went for a preliminary chat with the same one about help with pain control & anxiety but to be honest, as pleasant as he was, there was something that didn't feel right for me so I didn't follow it up. It was also very expensive & for problems like anxiety you'll need several sessions whereas smoking was a once only.
Good luck!

Thanks for your answers and concerns.
To be fair, after much soul searching and discussions (and rants) with my partner, the problem is more with me than with him.
The local council (whose motto should be "Too little too late") have been involved after complaints by his neighbour the other side, and he has tempered his behaviour. He doesn't play his music loud enough or for long enough for the council to monitor it, just the odd burst when he hears a song he likes, or his mates come round before going to the pub. We don't want to do too much too annoy him as we run a business from our house and do not want any repurcussions which may affect the business.
It's just that I get wound up when I hear the music start, just as I get wound up when some moron drives down the road, windows down, blasting out music, or some kids walk along the street shouting to each other when they are only a couple of feet apart.
So you see, I really have the problem. I hate inconsiderate noisy people, and there are more and more of them about.
I need some sort of system that allows me to turn off or surpress my anger when I feel my blood starting to boil.
I have tried cognitive behaviour therapy and distracting the catastrophic thoughts, but the brain is getting wise to this, and won't let me do it anymore.
So I thought of Hypnotherapy, to enable me to block the angry feelings.
I do see a chiropractor, I will ask him if he has made any contacts.
Once again thanks for the concern.
PS. 20SilkCut brings back memories - my first sales job was as a tobacco rep in the 70's with Gallaher Ltd and this was one of the brands I sold, when it was politically OK to smoke.

Hi willowman -
ok...you say you get wound up when you hear the music, when some moron drives down the road, windows down, blasting out music, or some kids walking along the street shouting to each other when they are only a couple of feet apart.
At least you realise that this is YOUR problem. Yes there are many inconsiderate noisey people about - but unfortunately we cant tell everyone to be quiet, much as we would like.... ;-)
You say you need some sort of system that allows you to turn off or suppress your anger when you feel your blood starting to boil and have tried CBT and have now thought of Hypnotherapy to enable you to block the angry feelings....
I would guess that the more you try to block these feelings, the more angry you become, - they are not being released and you are seeing the effects of that....the 'red mist' of anger, low threshold of acceptance of the noise etc of others. Keep this up and you will make yourself very unwell, mentally and physically. Talk to your Doctor and see if there are any Anger Management courses available to help you become able to release your anger in a safe and productive way. Get a punch bag and gloves and do some therapeutic boxing....Look at the other things in your life that may be contributing to the stresses you have...You say you run a business from home...is that stressful...money worries etc?
Let the anger out (safely)...dont hang onto it...you will feel the better for it.
Let me know how you get on with looking for Anger Management Courses. :-)
