What's the best part of life to learn to drive?

When you're 17, you got your a-levels to worry about, but often your parents pay for the lessons for your birthday.

After your a-levels you need to be saving up for uni costs.

During uni, you have no money and are busy either studying or working, trying to get enough money.

After uni, you still have no money as you have a student loan to pay off, plus when you start work, you'd have to have lessons after work, which are more expensive.

But then after that you have to buy a house and i'll have to have a mortgage, which means i'll still have no money.

Then i might have a family, which means i'll have even less money.

So by my reckoning, unless I don't learn to drive when i'm 17, I won't have enough money to, untill I don't have a mortgage on my house and any kids have left home. Is there any other way round this problem, unless my family win the lottery?

OMG...

Don't learn then...
A right merry little soul you are today! An hour a week isn't going to ruin your A levels.. I had six lessons during the summer holidays and passed first time... If you're capabable it's do-able... chin up lady!
mollykins- what driving instructor have you found where lessons are more expensive in the evenings? Most charge a standard price whatever time! Also, you don't HAVE to do anything that you've listed, you could always learn to drive and abandon everything else!
I got lessons for my 21st birthday and carried them on.
I eventually passed my test after 3 goes and drove full time from then on.
The only problem was I did not have my own car and my Dad was very very wary of letting me drive his!!!
I finally got my own car once I got married, Mr Funny bought me a little runaround.

I know the lessons cost a fortune these days, but back then they were cheap and my problem was just saving to buy a car.

I want to, and all my friends will, and it's useful. If I cam back to roughly where I live now, and worked at CEFAS, I could get a bus to work, but finding a place to work and either an affordable house thats not in a rough area that's either within wlaking distance or on a bus route will probably be tricky.
Jeezus Molly - don't try and run before you can walk. Enjoy your youth girl before you get yourself married off with kids, mortgage and no money....

Take advice from Nike - Just Do It...
Also.. if your faffing about paying for lessons... wait til you get the car.. that willl cost a fortune to insure, tax, service...etc.... I'll get me coat...
Why have 'professional' lessons? My dad taught my mum, my two sisters, and me, free of charge, and well all passed. Similarly, I taught my wife.

Find a relative or friend to teach you, and save the money.

Hippy, but if I don't learn quick enough and pass my test soon, it'll be winter and I don't want to not have the confidance to drive through the bad weather. Plus my parents aren't going to pay for it so i doubt i'll learn when i'm 17, which means, I won't learn until i'm mortgage free, with no kids.
So you're only going to drive in 'good' weather... best move abroad then!
Molly, you could always wait a couple of years after finishing uni to buy a house and have kids, also, wouldn't plan things too much they might not turn out the way you expect!

Andy, I'd rather not have my dad teach me, and my mum isn't confidant enough to teach me many things (Even she admits, I can parallel park a boat, better than she can a car, and in a tighter space.)

Hippy, I don't want to be an unconfidant, learner driver when the bad weather sets in, which is probably what'll happen if I do what you say, and only do an hour a week.
Surely your mum has left some money in your bank account..............?
Lol Molly! That’s reality, and going through the stages of living life there’s a thing called sacrifice. Most of us make great sacrifices in order to achieve the things we want in life. When someone wants something bad enough they do what they need and have to do in order to accomplish and become successful.
Molly...seriously. Have you seen the price of property? You really think you'll just be able to buy a house.
best time to learn is when (and if) you can afford to run a car.

Pretty pointless when you dont even have a saturday job really.

Umm, that's why I'd have to have a mortgage, or rent a place. Red, how does everyone else manage to go to uni, have kids and drive then?
How does anyone manage anything? They just get on with it... and don't spend hours & hours procrastinating, umming and aahing and putting imaginary obstacles in the way before they've even tried something.
Molly...you can't just get a mortgage because you want a house. The house across the road from me has just been repossessed and it still sold for just under 200k. A normal 3 bed terrace. How do you think you'd get a mortgage for that Molly?
