new gear/clutch for micra
I have a nissan micra n-cvt. at the last service i was told i might need new powder clutch and carbon brushes at a cost of 1400 pounds. Does this sound right? I thought my car being an automatic didn't have a clutch.
cheers

Is the car fairly new and still under warranty in which case you might have to go along with it in order not to invalidate the warranty. If not get a second opinion and hunt round for a cheaper quote.
You may get a better deal from somewhere like "Mr Clutch" if there is one in your area.
Find out what the carbon brushes thing is all about and get back here for more advice.
It's because it isn't really an automatic but a 'Constantly Variable Transmission' (CVT). It's like the old DAF Variomatics. Basically you have two cones inside your transmission with a belt attaching them to each other. As one cone squeezes together, making a smaller gap, the other cones gap gets wide. This makes the belt gone down into the gap, and on the one squeezing together makes it climb it. Imagine the gear system on a bicycle with it's deralier (sp??) gears, it's similar to that. Between this transmission and the engine would be a kind of clutch, but I haven't a clue what it's like since I've never seen one apart.
On your Micra, can you say rev up to 5000 RPM and then the car eventually catches up with it? To the uninitiated it sounds like a car slipping it's clutch, but it's normal on CVT cars.
The price does seem excessive, but it is a specialist job and I doubt you could get anyone else to fix it other than a Nissan garage (i.e. licence to print money!).
