I Hate My Cucking Fat Today.

Got into bed at 12.30 ish this morning with my book and immediately smelled a not very nice smell. Then realised my 18 year old cat had peed on my beautiful one week old £200 bedspread. Yanked off the rest of the bedding and put it in washing machine but the pee had gone right through to my mattress. I've had my mattress for about 5 years and it was immaculate; now its got a massive stain in the middle of it. I turned it over as there was nothing else I could do but I suppose it's ruined now? This is the first time Maggie has done this but at 18 it probably won't be the last, so I suppose I might as well hang on to the mattress for a bit longer(OMG unless it starts stinking). What can I do? And the second problem is my beautiful bedspread which is dry clean only. Trouble is the lady at the cleaners says sometimes the stain will become compounded if dry cleaned so should I risk washing it? And the cause of all this is curled up fast asleep on my bed. Arrrrgggg! Help!

I would get rid of the source of your problem - the thing curled up fast asleep and uncaring and incontinent on your bed......

aahhh. she is a really old lady and should be excused. Personally I never buy anything that won't go in the washer and under the circumstances I would chance it. Our cat died when she was 18 and she was a sweetie until the last. Mere house furnishings do not count do they, living things are much more important.

It will be the cat's age. I have two who are 21 years old in human years and for the last year have had to have a litter tray for them or they pee on the floor. If it is a nice day I make them stay outside and that solves the problem, but at night there is no answer unless you leave them out which is not fair.
I think soda water gets animal pee out.

Thanks for the advice Tia. I may take it up in part but defo not the Febreze bit. I'd rather have the smell of cat's pee than Febreze:-(

My sister has the same problem with her ageing cat. I go to stay at hers whenver they go away and the cat always pees on the very expensive bed spreads they have. (or the clothes that I leave on the floor). Dry cleaning them has always been ok with hers in the past.

As a future note, if you don't allow pets into the bedroom then at least your mattress and quilt should be safe.

As for your more immediate problem, sorry I can only hope someone has a working solution. Aside from replacement that is.

Carole she has a large litter tray to use and always has until last night. She's not allowed to stay out at night. I've got some soda crystals so might try those on the mattress. Salla - out of the question but I do take your point. Had her since she was 6 weeks old. She stays until she dies. But I do hope this was a one-off. I see you understand star. i've decided I am going to risk the bedspread in the washing machine on say 40 degrees. Fingers crossed.

OG if I don't allow her in the bedroom she might do it on my furniture in the sitting room so I don't know which is worse.

I suspect she needs her own personal pet basket to be territorial over.

It might be worth taking her to the vet to see if she has any physical ailment that has caused her to do this.

OG - the problem with cats is that they will sleep where they want to sleep. I tried locking my two out of my bedroom (they were using my bed as a race track during the night) and they tried to dig through the door. After a few attempts I gave up.

Febreze - that stuff gave my Frankie a major asthma attack. I didn't even know that cats could get asthma.

My last dog died about ten years ago and in the final months he leaked urine over my living room carpet. I got it cleaned professionally after he died.

for future use...buy a large sheet of heavy duty polythene and use it to cover your bed when you are not actually in it..... if you put a cheap fleece blanket on top its easy to wash out if kitty has another accident... you are lucky its just bedding...a friends cat when old and senile pee'd in the toaster

LOL Rowan how the heck did it manage that. Excuse me while I go and remove the toaster, although toaster is cheaper to replace than a mattress.
Heavy duty polythene, oh dear, my lovely boudoir. Oh I do hope it was a one-off.

One Cat I had crapped in my Slippers and I put my feet in it first thing in the morning.
He usually went out through the window at night to do his business but the wind had blown it shut.
Had a good laugh about it afterwards !!!!

if you havent already washed the bedspread wash on a cold wash with some liquid bold or such like and give a very short spin as for the matress give it a good scrub with some washing liquid dont worry if it gets soaked just put some plastic over it and put the sheet on top till it drys , we had a cat that was a nigytmare for peeing on my son bed if helef his door open

wolf63 she has hyperthyroidism and had half her thyroid removed last year and at the moment she has a urine sample at the vets waiting to be tested for kidney problems. ruthann I have washed the bedspread on 'delicate' @ 30 degrees and I think it's OK but hard to tell as it's wet at the moment. I'll spread it out on the bed and have a proper look when it's dry. The mattress got the Kim and Aggie (How Clean is Your House) treatment with bicarbonate of soda and it's looking good. Thanks for your replies.
