Cat put to sleep

I can't sleep, hence my posting at this hour. My elderly cat that I have had since a kitten is very frail, unstable, weak, incontinent and no longer 'with it'. This deterioration has escalated significantly in the last few weeks, so I am starting to realise that the hardest thing may be the best. What is in the lethal injection, how does it work and what will my beloved black tom feel?

not able to think about another dog as yet, been 18 months now halifaxmum, I just can't see myself with another dog!........miss Ollie lots, but just can't take another dog!......would compare it to him, and that's unfair!......he was such a gentleman!.........
It is easier if you have someone to talk to about your cat's happy life - recounting all the funny and stupid things that he did over the years.

In the 'olden days' people would just say that he was 'just' a cat/dog and not at all important and thus their deaths were unimportant. This is bu11-5h1t - just because a member of your family has four legs instead of two doesn't affect its importance to the humans around him

He was, to you, an intelligent and loving friend all wrapped up in a little furry body. My two are 6 tomorrow and I love them so much and the thought of losing them is quite unsettling.

Having said all that if Frankie doesn't stop nagging me for 'fud' I may throttle him.

welsh - i know how you feel, i really do. bert was one on his own - he understood what you said, how you felt, he was so sensitive he just knew when you needed a cuddle and when you needed to be left alone.

i'm not saying you should get another dog, i think this is something you can only decide yourself, but pea is such an amazing little man, he understands so much and we both see a lot of bert in him...

i hope your heart can heal, you'll never forget him, nor should you, but it's so comforting to remember and talk about the good times you shared. i hope you have someone you can do this with x
wolf susan - you are absolutely right - they are in our hearts, just like people are.

and, before anyone tells me otherwise, i have experienced the loss of people who were closest to me, so i really do know x

lol @your comment about Frankie though!

Thanks again everyone. Sharing these memories with you has helped.

You never get over a loss like this, you just learn to live with it.
SpikeyBush, I've only just read your thread as I haven't been on AB for a few weeks. My heart goes out to you. I hope you're feeling a wee bit better now. Wendilla, if you see this as well, just to let you know you made me cry with the Rainbow Bridge, although I've seen it many times before. I'm just thinking, I'll get totally mugged when it's my time to go!! Four German Shepherds, 4 cats & my lovely husband all waiting for me.....!!! (still got 5 cats & 2 collies here with me - it'll be pandemonium!). What a lovely thought, though, that we'll all be reunited some day......K xx
Thinking so much of you, spikey - you know you have done the right thing by your furry friend ♥
Gosh 25 years ago and it still brings tears. We had the best gentlest vet in the world - my dog trusted her, she put him on a drip when he had cat flu and saw him through lots but when his time came she told me I could prolong his agony or I could let him go to sleep peacefully. We stayed with him while he closed his eyes and then brought him home and buried him in the garden, and planted a shrub over him. Be prepared for many tears.
My thoughts are with you
