Ok I have a small aquarium with twelve small fish in. A few weeks ago a couple of fish was "missing" when we looked in the tank. So bought some new ones. My husband changed the water on tuesday and all well. Got up this morning and there was a dead fish on the floor. The tank is on a sideboard and there is a space of 12inches to the end of it. But the dead fish was on the carpet.? And it wasnt one of these 12 fish as they are all there. Soooooooo where did this one fish come from.???????????We just don't know what to think.

Weather conditions? Sorry, couldn't resist it. Have you got a cat that could have had one of the original fish but hid it somewhere then brought it out again and put it on the carpet?
Have you got a cat Lilac.

No no cat.! x
Oh dear, no you have set a quandry. Do you have a ghost in your house or poltergeist as this seems so bizarre from what you describe such a strange occurrence.
High-jumping fish...............
Craft this could be a record for a fish then, I wonder if the Guniness book of record knows lol. Was it long jump or high jump? Flying tonight!
lol invisible pole vault........

I am loving your answers but it is still a mystery to us.? BY the way there is only a gap of 1cm around the edge of the top and glass cover.?
Well lilac it certainly seems a mystery other than someone doing it to trick you or the fish getting its own back for whatever reason (sorry)...it's really strange I must say and a mystery that perhaps you may never resolve.
Sorry, but it is not mystery. You have miscounted somewhere along the way and this fish has jumped out, accidentally through the gap. They flap about for a fair while as they don't die straight away, they actually suffocate. You'd flap about a flat while too if you couldn't get any oxygen.
^typos were inserted on purpose to keep you awake.

wildwood, We had thought of that but the fish was only just over half and inch long. Could it have flapped around enough to move 12 inches of the end of the sideboard and land on the floor on the carpet.? I would swear also there was only 12 fish in there. 7 older ones and the 5 newer ones.
Fish can flap about and move some distance when out of water lilac, maybe wildwood's answer is about right?
cats?...they are normally the first thing people point their fingers to on this kind of senario!
Oh yes lil, 12" is nothing as it was most probably scared and jumped out, maybe through a slamming door in the house or being chased by one of the other fish. It could have easily landed 6" away from the tank so only 6" to flap.

Actually, it may have been the one that was being chased before so was hiding when you counted.
Is there any chance you have had a baby in there....you'll be surprised how elusive a baby platy or mollie can be to evade being eaten
