considering getting another dog

Hi all, wondering if you could give me any advice, I have an 18month Staffie b!tch, but me and the OH are considering getting another one (probably an older one) from a re-homing shelter. Are there any benefits/ bad sides, of having 2 dogs? I just saw ratters video and it makes me want two all the more, so my little Xena has someone to play with lol. Thanks in advance x

Can't help you - but Xena is a lovely name for a Staffie. All tough on the outside with a Princess inside.

Really it is a case of your own suitability and affordability. If you can dedicate the time and resources for another dog I don't see any reason why not. I would certainly take advice on what sex and age would be most suitable, staffies can be a bit touchy about bringing another dog into the home, a little territorial and often "dog aggressive" Talk to the breed clubs for advice first.

I think some rescue centres won't let a Staffie go to a home that has another dog, I hope you can find one that does as there are loads of them out there that need a loving home.

Thanks Ratter, she has always been great with other dogs, but as you say, she may get more aggressive if it's in HER home. She has stayed with a friend of mine for a long weekend while I was away and she also has a female staffy, got on great and she loved it, again however, may be the territorial issue if one was bought into the home. I am going to the re-homing place later on today, so will ask advice from them if they are any help, if not will ring my vets/ or find a number that can give advice. Hi D9, I know on some of the advertisements some state no other dogs in the home, but others don't. Not sure if this is a mess up on their account or if it means they are able to, I will be sure to ask :D (if I can find it lol) x

Roxie, if money can be an issue with you perhaps you should reconsider whether you should have another dog? What if you get sudden vet bills? I have just shelled out £135 for x-ray and meds as my dog was suffering from severe constipation!

Roxie your in for a shock, rehoming fees can be approching £200. If you cant afford to have your existing bitch spayed, dont even think of re-homing another.

Thanks for all your input guys! Very much appreciated, I didn't get to the homing place as something came up, so going to go tomorrow hopefully, even if it's just to have a look around. As the re-homing company is owned by the council they have a reduced rate for certain things, which when I eventually get there, will discuss with them. I know it can be costly if something goes wrong, but I would like to at least try. x

reminds me of this Yorkshire joke, iAN.

A Yorkshiremans' wife dies and the widower decides that her headstone should have the words "she were thine" engraved on it.

He calls the stone mason, who assures him that the headstone will be ready a few days after the funeral.

True to his word the stone mason calls the widower to say that the headstone is ready and would he like to come and have a look.

When the widower gets there he takes one look at the stone to see that it's been engraved "she were thin".
