Natural home fragrance

Has anybody got any ways they've used to fragrance their home? Plug in air fresheners smell a bit cloying to me, and I'm looking for something more natural. I use candles occasionally, but want something I don't have to remember to extinguish!

1) chop up an orange and put it in a bowl of water with some cloves and a cinamon stick put in the microwave on medium for 20 minutes opening the door every so often

2) aromatherapy oil on a tissue tucked behind a radiator or in another warm spot... lemongrass is nice so is orange or at this time of year silver fir for a proper christmas tree scent


3) natural beeswax candles

4) vanilla pods or other spices in the bottom of a low oven

I won't use plug-ins, they're a fire hazard - but I do have a squirty battery operated timer spray, to sometimes diffuse the whiff of cat.... I wish someone would invent a small to get rid of the smell of burnt toast. I think we need a new toaster.

I have 3 cats and they don't smell boxtops,why does yours?

difusers all so put some after shave or perfume on light bulbs as they heat up they let the smell go

It's not general, catgirl - it's just that before Rover left home and came back, he used to spray a lot. That is not a good smell. (I am keeping my fingers very crossed but he seems to have forgotten about it, since he came come!)

Thank you - I'll have to find some fresh coffee - the drawback is that I don't like the smell of coffee....

oh and bicab under the carpets on top of the underlay is quite good for absorbing smells

We have reed diffusers, candles, oil burners, room sprays. We just like the house to smell nice. The Body Shop's Raspberry and Pomegranate reed diffuser is our current favourite, closely followed by the new Cranberry Chutney Yankee Candle.... mmmmmm :)

We have an assortment of genuine aromatherapy oils - mandarin and frankincense at the moment. Others to use - spearmint, vetiver, palmarosa etc.

got some honeysuckle absolute recently lovely smell for a bedroom Have put some on the silk roses in the window so they warm slightly in the sun...

Place will mostly smell of baking and chocolate until christmas

Many thanks for your answers. I think I'll try the aromatherapy oils, possibly in a burner. I've been looking at aromatherapy oils online, and wonder would essential oils do the same job?

Essential oils *are* aromatherapy oils - they are the real, natural thing. Avoid anything else - "perfume oils" are synthetic and can make you fell unwell.

Depending on what sort of money your looking at, fresh flowers are also a great idea. Something like a lilly have a very strong fragrance so a bunch of 2-4 (£4-8) should be sufficient. having said that, they only last 1-2 weeks, but bring some great colour along with a lovely scent

oh, and id suggest investing in a reed diffuser rather then a burner, especially with animals. saves a fire hazard, and i find burners can be too pungent depending on room size and oil strength
