The truth of the matter is there are good purebred breeders and bad ones good ' hobby breeders' and bad ones and with regard to mongrels aren't healthier than pure breds that is only true to some extent. True if the purebred adult has a defective gene the puppy might inherit it, no-one can argue with that, but not all breeds suffer from the same genetic problems, thus if you are dealing with crossbreds you are at least negating the possibility for certain that you are breeding from dogs which both carry the same defective genes, the same thing cannot be said when dealing with purebreds, which are frequently ' line bred'. Line breeding is fine if you have dead on healthy specimens, if you don't you simply repeat the risk of a duff gene being passed down- it's one of the reasons incest sometimes causes genetic problems in humans. I'm not a great fan of either dog showing breeders or back yard breeders but those of us who love dogs ought to give the other good guys a break and it should never turn into a 'them and us' scenario simply because some people breed mongrels and some breed purebreds- what we really need to be doing is addressing the situation of so many irresponsible breeders and owners in both camps.
