my girlfriends dog when travelling in her car will sleep in the passenger seat footwell, when coming back even from a long journey he will be aware that she has turned into the avenue where she lives even though he cannot see anything from where he is, how does he know he is home
My husband works a weird shift pattern and the time he arrives home tends to vary (a lot) but one of our cats takes up station by the front door about 15 minutes before he arrives home
you are gviing signals to your dog without realising it. I used to think my dog just KNEW when OH half was coming home from work, as he always sat next to the door ten minutes or so before he came home. The dog probably picked up on the fact that the phone rings, I say 'see you soon', quickly run around and do the housework, wash up, make myself look respectable and then sit down, etc, dogs pick up on our behaviour and body language. It's not sixth sense.
As I said on the previous thread I used to leave my GSD with my mum and dad. At the time was working all sorts of shift patterns and any thing from 6-12 hours so my parents could not have subconsciously given any signals to the dog as they never knew just when I'd arrive, in fact it was the other way round as soon as he moved to the door mum put the kettle on.
