my 12 year old border collie bitch has started scratching at carpets and floors as if she is digging. is there a reason for this and how can i stop her. shes bright and alert as usual.

did you just as this a few days ago? I wonder if, at 12, she is beginning dementia? Might be worth talking to the vet.

Phantom pregnancy ? Our dog used to do this.

Maybe she just needs out or has lots of energy

Our old Jetspoon used to do this. She was 14 when she died and did it for about the last 2 years, mainly if she was frightened or left alone. She used to get in the bath and 'dig' even on the dressing table! Can't help as far as a reason is concerned though.
