Well Mr Harv was booked to have two teeth removed today as he broke them whilst trying to eat a golf ball a few weeks ago and I only noticed them loose about a week ago.
I am just after ringing vets up to see how he is and the receptionist said they had to remove about 4 or 5 at the back as they were badly infected.
She said to call for him at 5 o'clock - can I ask here why would he (dog) have been so heavily sedated - could they (vet) not have given him a light sedation etc.
Also will he miss these teeth for eating. Thanks for any reassurance. Conne
No he won't miss the teeth dogs learn to manage well with no teeth at all and infected teeth can cause serious problems, even life threatening ones. He may need a soft diet for a little while or even for good but that shouldn't be a problem. For dogs having teeth removed is scary and can be painful so its best for the dog to be deeply asleep and relaxed while its done.
Also back teeth are much deeper seated and take more removing than front or side ones, therefore he needs to be fully asleep so he doesn't feel anything or start to wake up while they are doing the operation.
I can assure you, he'll manage fine minus a few teeth.
Both my Yorkies recently had dental treatment. One had 18 out and the other had 25 out!!
..... I posted a similar question on here, just a little while ago:
Just a wee update. Got Mr Harv and home. He is lying on his wee bed with a blanket round him but crying and feeling sorry for himself.
Went to Sainsburys and bought him a whole chicken - mixed a little breast with some water which he gulped down. At least there is something in his stomach until tomorrow. Vet this time was lovely and kindly - has given me antibiotics so he hopefully will be up and running tomorrow.
Even when he came in - he is obsessed with balls - he took a leap to his ball but was unable to move it. Apparently his teeth were in a bad way so it was a blessing in disguise for the broken teeth to happen because he would have been in more pain that I would have realised.
my dogs can take up to 48 hours to get over anaesthetic so don't be too worried if he is sleepy today. I should also mention that its common for the gas passed after anaesthetic to be stinky in the extreme!! A day or so resting and being spoilt and I am sure he will be fine.
ah thank you all - he has been a bit dopey a bit today and also Afraid to bark too so he whines.
But we will get out for a short walk tomorrow. He has all his orders today. I just don't know how anybody could cope and leave them. He has been at my ide all day and now in bedroom. God bless all TRUE animal lovers.
