I think frank is exactly right. There is so much variation in breeds (i think dogs officially have the most variation in one species). It depends entirely on what suits you. We've had German shepherds, golden retrievers, standard poodle, mongrels, springers, cavaliers, spaniel crosses (all rescued). And each and every one of them were lovely in their own way. We have cavaliers now, as great temperaments with children and relaxed. Will walk as far as you want, but also happy with just company. Fussy with food and not the brightest, though!
Frank has it. It's horses, or, rather, dogs for courses. I would never have a Dobermann or any guard, protection or fighting breed in a home with very small children. But a lab or golden retriever would be fine. If you like a breed that's very active and more intelligent than you are, pick a Border collie! There are at least 170 breeds on the Kennel Club list and every one of them has been originally bred for a purpose, from retrieving game to being a dog for temples, from living on barges to guarding taxmen, the vestiges of which remain in its behaviour and character. There will be one that's essentially right for you. Me, I like Irish Wolfhounds; big, affectionate, not very bright; Dandie Dinmonts; small, not cuddly and typical terriers; and Hungarian Pulis; stubborn, crafty, and aggressive enough to require experienced owners; but all to their own
My first dog was a Bull Mastiff crossed with a GSD and the next was a Labrador crossed with a GSD. Both great dogs. First one I got as a puppy from a friend but the second one was a rescue dog.
I would never get a devil dog like a Jack Russell or something small and yappy but would consider most other breeds or a mutt.
I may get another if my health improves - meantime I am a cat slave.
