Cat Driving Me Crazy Through The Night!!

Pretty sure my cat has always had a screw loose but I still love him!

He'll randomly "go mad" and start scratching with his claws on cupboards etc. Not so bad when I'm awake but I still tell him off when he does it. However, he's started doing it in the middle of the night and he just won't stop, despite me shouting or chasing him or throwing (soft) things at him! This can go on forever!!

Any ideas as to what I can do to stop this? I need sleep!!!

Give him all he needs / wants in the kitchen and close the door. When no one comes he will tire of his antics and go to sleep.

He's got a scratching post which he uses. Seems to favour furniture instead at the mo tho! I used to shut him in the living room and he had free run of there and the kitchen - perfect. Where I live now is a different layout - open plan downstairs so can't shut him in anywhere and if I shut him in a room upstairs, I'd be able to hear him scratching on the door!

He did it again last night (3rd night in a row), I'm sooo tired!!

Throwing things and shouting isn't going to help, you're giving him attention while you're telling him off. He's bored. You can also get his front toenails clipped, it might be that they are too long and he's trying to reduce them. Mine do it on a fence post out in the garden.

One of our cats does this. She doesn't actually scratch the furniture, more paws at it until you acknowledge her! I think it's her way of saying she wants something!

Well it is maybe his way of getting attention but,maybe the Feliway will help.Have you tried playing a game with him before bed time?good luck.

All cats (and my dog does it too) have a mental 10 minutes or so, where they baz around the house completely bonkers, my cat even growls as she does it too. So I don't think you can actually stop him i'm afraid, it's just what they do.

Thanks Boxtops - will try the Feliway. I've done everything I can to tire him out - played with him, cuddled up with him etc etc - but he still does it! Like someone else said, he's not scratching on the wardrobe as such, just making a noise basically!! If he's awake then apparently so should I be haha!
