I am looking at getting a (first for me) fish tank/aquarium. I am confused over the first question - size, and would like some advice please. On the one hand, the web site gives a tank of this dimension 39 x 62 x 72 cm as having a volume of 130 litres, whilst an on-line fish tank volume calculator shows this size has a volume of 175 litres. The difference is vast - 45 litres or (in old money) 10 Gallons. Why the difference please?

The dimensions equate to 175 litres, but I guess you simply don't fill it right to the top........... would be a bit messy ;o)
The exact volume of that tank is 174096 cm3 so that is a volume of about 175 litres but maybe the dimensions of the web site tank includes sitting on a base and a top (ie it's the total size) - so it wouldn't all be filled with water.
Dont forget a sturdy base for it to sit on. ! gallon of water weighs 10lbs in old money.
Even allowing for the thckness of the glass and an air space at the top there s still a discrepancy of 35 litres. Do the overall dimensions that you quoted include the cover/light unit?
Ok, the tank capacity is 175 litres but you need to allow displacement for sand or gravel, plus obviously not filling it to the top. You usually take away about 15% from the 175 litres which would give you approx 150 litres.
