Her and her friend could have died out there and in doing so, put others at risk of loss of life because they would have had to go out searching for her; she's not a hero, she's a very lucky idiot and so is her friend. I love Eric dearly, but there are limits - usually ones that are to do with my personal safety, and the personal safety of others who would have to come looking for me.

Thinking like that, CD would preclude so many actions and activities it would make for a very dull world....no-one is forced into rescue missions.

If blame is to be laid it should be with the vet who wouldn't treat.

Yes. It's an irreplaceable living animal, so i understand their determination. I would agree with CD if it was anything less than a human or animal.

And no, no one is forced in to rescue missions, but most people will try and help other people because most people are good and kind, especially people who put their lives on the line for others voluntarily - I just think that had this been necessary then it would be because of two incredibly stupid people. I also don't think an animals life is worth the life of a human (generally, there are people I consider way less evolved than some animals).

I maintain that the actions of these two people were stupid, irresponsible and very far from any definition I have of 'heroic'. And it would be such a dull world if we all agreed :c)

I don't think it's to do with being a "good story". They are risking themselves (nobody else) to save an animal's life.

And had they died or got lost - how many lives would they have risked for those who had to go looking for them? Just because that didn't happen does make them less irresponsible or less stupid - just lucky. So like I said, 'lucky idiots'.

This is perhaps a slightly different case, since the cat was ill and therefore needed treatment to live. But you do hear these stories often about people desperately trying to save their pets -- dogs, cats, even chickens -- and dying in the process. Sometimes even while the pet in question survives without needing help.

I can understand this woman's actions, but this could have easily been a very different story indeed.

it's certainly a sunnier story than "helicopter pilot killed in crash while trying to rescue sick cat", but this is only because it had a happy ending. She's entitled to risk her own life, but if the DOT people were busy with mopping-up operations (it doesn't say), it's not right to get in their way.

I felt the vet in her own town could have been more helpful.

I don't see it as heroic- they were just doing what needed to be done. But not irresponsible, either. The reason was vital.

I suppose we all view risks and life differently....I laud those who take on mountains, seas, flight etc for the thrill of it......for the sense of achievement.
They could be said to be putting others at risk for a less honourable reason than this woman did.

Who is to say what reaction is 'right' when a beloved pet is at risk? I think many/most pet owners will describe the animals that share their lives with them as "one of the family". And who of us would not make a super colossal effort to save a family member?
Its all well and good being very cool and logical about what we should do...a bit different when the pressure is on.

Well done to them both they are hero's in my eyes. China Doll people do stupid things every single day and the rescue teams go out and get them. Skiers, drivers, mountain climbers, etc etc. Should we not go out and help them? For the record an animals life is just as important as YOURS and MINE.

I have to say I agree with China on this. I also think that if anyone who is taking part in a pastime or sport that then requires them to be rescued they should be charged for the services of the rescuers.

Nice headline, but the truth is that the cat is only incidental to this story. The woman was jailed for ignoring DOT workers and necessitating a helicopter being called out.

While it's true that rescue workers are brave, many of them would not risk their necks to save the life of an animal they did not even know. However, when that animal causes humans to put their lives at risk, then the rescue workers' lives are, ultimately, at risk for the sake of an animal. That isn't fair.
