Bins And Maggots

We have a tiny kitchen which has no floor space or counter space for a bin so we keep it in the shade in the yard and we also have a large bin like a wheelie but smaller for old bags that are full. This time if year is a nightmare bin wise for maggots.

We clean the bin after every two weekly collection and usually double bag the rubbish which in itself is a waste but there are always maggots in there. The lid is sealed on the larger bin which stores the old bags.

The 'house' bin has a flip up lid which is closed all the time, flies are obviously getting in.

What can I do which is cat friendly to stop the little blighters laying eggs and causing me grief?

Thanks for your help

sprinkle lots and lots of curry powder in the bin - if you can remember to wear gloves when you open the bin, put it around where the lid rests on the bottom bit too.

Thanks RSVP but I don't think the will please the kitty who has to share the small yard with the bin which is very close to the cat flap, no where else for it :(
If you only put it in the bottom of the bin then, unless the cat physically jumps into the bin he/she won't come into contact with the curry powder.

Surely he will smell it though - they have super sensitive noses? I shall google RSVP and give it a go

Aye, crunch those bones, swallow those skins and sinews, eggshell sarnies are the new cuisine.

Come on Mick, everyone has a bit of waste.
greenfly - of course you have to be happy about what you use around your home and pets. For what it's worth though, I used it for years and have had dogs, cats you name it I've had one! Never had a problem - as a matter of interest we use curry powder etc when we're cooking and the cats have never objected, they still got under my feet in the kitchen all the time!!! Hope you find a solution you're happy with.
