I trust my first instinct all the time when driving i.e. whether to stay or pull out, whether to risk the traffic being busy one way, or go the scenic route home etc etc.
First instincts aren't always good though, so catching a hot iron can be a mistake!

First instincts are generally overruled as you get older through a learned reaction instead. Take two very young children playing - if one hits the other, the first instinct is to defend themselves and they will hit back. When they are a little older, the child who is hit will not hit back as they have learnt that it is wrong, so their first instinct is overruled by either no reaction or crying in frustration. As adult's we take on another learnt instinct after being hit, our first instinct then is to call a 'where there's blame, there's a claim' lawyer.
We have learnt over time to stop the first instinct reaction and to not catch the hot iron so to speak.

In that case then yes, I'd have to go with my first instinct. It confuses the bejeezes out of me why instincts feel as strong as they do, but I guess if you had no other learned information or experience to go on and the choice was to do one thing or the other, then yep, you'd cut the wire that you felt was right at the time.
I guess that could be attributed to part of natural selection (? I don't know, just guessing here) but if a human didn't know of or see another human eat a berry on a tree, who then didn't survive, they would go with their gut instinct and eat the berry. If they had no other info to go on, they would go with their gut feeling not knowing if the berry was poisonous or not.

Yes,very frustrating when you get no kind of instinct at all.If you tend to go with your first instinct then I always think 'well,I didnt talk myself out of something' and shouldnt be too disappointed at making a wrong choice. What is instinct though from a physiological sense,is something in particular happening? Chemical reaction? Why dont we always get it? ....
