Are Some Dog Foods Worse Than Others At Causing A Dog To Smell?
47 Answers
I know all dogs smell but my latest rescue dog really whiffs. The smell seems to seep out of his skin and I can only assume that it's the food I feed him. It is the usual doggy smell but very strong. And I'm wondering if changing to fresh raw chicken etc might alleviate it. At the moment he has Nature's Diet soft food, just a slice, mixed with James Wellbeloved Fish & Rice Complete, not the most expensive but far from the cheapest either, like say Orijen. He's a JR/CorgiX.
I don't want to use air freshener, I want to stop the cause, if possible. Any help appreciated. Thank you.
If Ratter's about I'd be interested to know his experience regarding the above and what exactly he feeds his Wolfies.

His ears are fine pp thanks for the suggestion. He is seen by the vet 3-weekly and has been for 4-5 months due to a paw problem and the possible removal of a toe. Woof no I haven't mentioned it to the vet but I would have if I'd remembered. I will on our next appointment. If there is no skin problem then I'll look at the raw food diet a bit more closely. He's 9.5 years old BTW.
Thanks everyone (except Baldric:-)

Baldric thank you for your suggestion but I agree with piper @21.44. It really is rubbish and I wouldn't feed it to my dog.

ladybirder, Obviously you need to eliminate all other possibilities first, when we put our hounds on raw we noticed a difference immediately, they stopped breaking wind, their poo's were half the size and even when wet they did not have that doggy smell about them. It really is the best way to go.
It does work out more expensive and it is more work, some butchers carry minced dog food or you can order it to be delivered through various websites. One thing our hounds love is chicken carcasses. not a lot of meat on them but the bone is excellent for the required calcium, some butchers give them away to regulars to make soups and stocks etc. There are plenty of sites around where you can get some great advice on RAW feeding. Just ensure the dogs get a reasonable balance of meats and a little offal and bone. (do not cook the chicken carcasses)

Bless you Ratter. Thanks. My usual supplier, Berriewood Pet Supplies, sells most of what you suggest. I think I'll start by replacing some of his daily food allowance with a piece of fresh chicken and gradually increase the amount and add other things as we go on whilst decreasing the manufactured stuff to zero. But I'll need to check he's getting all the vitamins he needs. He does eat raw veg. I also have to find out what daily amount I should be giving a 9kg dog. Don't worry I wouldn't dream of feeding a dog cooked chicken bones. X
Bakers really is the pits!!! I would never entertain giving it to my hounds. http:// www.dog listene r.co.uk /bakers -pedigr ee-dogf ood
We all know we can find sites to promote or *** off any product if we look hard enough.
The last Dog we had before the two we have now was a Dobie/GSD X, about 45kgs, fit as a fiddle, lived to 13½, lost him 2004, as well as the two we have now, both Dobies, 42 and 50kgs respectively and both mature, (8½ & 10) have always been fed Bakers with a few extras, according to Vet both in top condition, not overweight and fit, so we've had no problems with it.
