Has Anybody Any Idea Why My Dog Rushes To His Water Bowl ...

and drinks for England as soon as he realises he is going out? The minute I change my shoes, or pick up my keys, or grab a handful of poo bags or unhook his lead, he's off, throwing water down his throat as if he's never had a drink in his life. And he doesn't stop until I've gathered everything and moved towards the door. Funny chap!
Has anyone else got a dog that does this or have any idea why mine does?

Hmmm - Ladybirder, I've no idea other than just he's excited and happy and is just finding something to channel his excitement on until you are ready.
What happens when you take the bowl away then get ready for a walk? I'll bet he'd try and find a toy or sock or shoe to run around with until the it's time to go :-)

Very good Psybbo, that could indeed be the reason. He's tanking up for the journey. Bless him.
You could be right as well Peas, he's certainly excited. I don't take his bowl away, he just leaves it when I move towards the door and he doesn't really do playing with stuff, just chases his ball when we're out or in the garden.
Two good answers so far, thank you.

My German Shepherd used to do that. We had a water bowl outside as well as inside and she would have a long, long drink whilst we waited patiently to put on her lead.
Then, when we got to the river, which is two minutes away from us, she would go and have another drink. I put it down to excitement and gearing up for the enjoyment of the walk.
