3 Year Old Cat With Kidney Failure

My darling Fred, 3, has chronic kidney failure. The vet said he's never seen such blood results in such a young cat.

Fred won't eat any cat food, not even the Royal Canin Renal food that the vet prescribed. All he will eat is bits of chicken and ham. He's drinking loads.

He was 5.4kg, he was a big boy, not fat, just large. He went down to 4.8kg, then 4.7kg, now he's gone up to 5.1kg. The vet thinks this may be due to fluid retention.

Today's visit to the vet revealed he also has a galloping heartbeat. He's lethargic, his breath smells terrible and he has no interest in anything.

He's such a character, he always used to insist on giving me a kiss through the banisters on the stairs every time I went up or down them. He greeted me with a nose kiss in the morning and when I came home.

I don't really know why I'm posting this. An appointments due for tomorrow to put him to sleep. I'm truly heartbroken. I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance that I'm doing the right thing?

Halifaxmum all I can offer is bags of sympathy, that's dreadful for you for one so young. It's heartbreaking, you will be very very sad. I'd take the advice of the vet in such a case, I'm so sorry.

Thank you prudie. I've cried a lot over the past few weeks while the vets been investigating him. I havent stopped crying since I left the vets at 5 o'clock. I love him so much
Poor you. It's so heartbreaking :-(
I know exactly how you feel and so will many others on here. We do love them so. It's a horrible time for you.

Thank you umm and prudie, I have vowed to never get another pet again! I've still got my beautiful, stroppy Luna (Fred's little sister) but I won't get any more, the heart can only be broken so many times
Oh, Halifaxmum - that's awful news for you. Fred is so very young to have a problem such as this. You'll miss him terribly and so will Luna - she'll be in need of extra fuss, treats and cuddles.

Take care.x

Thank you ouzel, he will always be in my heart, Luna will get all the cuddles and treats xxx
So sorry to hear your news halifaxmum it's something so many ABers have been through.
I can't add anything to what has already been said. Three year old is still young for a cat. It is a shame that we can't sit them down and explain that the Renal food I'd going to make him feel better.

Best wishes to you and Fred x

So sorry to hear your news, I know how you feel, I went through the the same with my beloved Shelley. Vowed I'd never have another pet as I couldn't stand the heartbreak. That was 15 years ago. I do get tempted at times but always talk myself out of it. Please just remember how much you loved him and take comfort from the fact he loved you too.
So so sorry to read this, Fred's too young to be going thru this, I know how you're feeling, I bawled when my big fuzz ball went to cat heaven and Ziggi is slowly taking his place some 10 years later.

Luna will help but it'll be hard for her too, hugs to all xx
Just to add my sympathy like everyone else. You are doing the best thing for Fred and the only humane thing. Animal love sucks big time cos there is always so much heartache.

Thank you paddy, wolf, caran, seeker and bunk, your kind words are just lovely.

Freds breathing has changed this morning, his whole body seems to be pushing to breathe. He's had a few twitches too. I think he's ready to go to Puss cat heaven now xxx
\\ I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance that I'm doing the right thing?\\

You ARE doing the right thing.
That is so sad , I am so sorry for you and your puss, at least you know you have done everything possible, to help him, and he will stay in your heart forever.

Yes, you are doing the right thing, it's the last Act of Love you can do for him, he will be at Peace, no more suffering, and you will have your memories of him to fall back on.
You will never forget today for two reasons. You are losing your beloved Fred. You love Fred so much that you are putting him first and doing the right thing for him. Have been there. My thoughts are with you, and Luna x
So sorry to hear your sad news.
I cannot add to what has already been said - I know only too well how it feels.
I too vowed never to have another cat, but I did eventually (four years ago)
I feel sure you are doing the right thing with Fred, although it is heart breaking.
Time is a healer

I'm sorry Halifaxmum, I really do know how you feel and it's horrendous, especially as he's so young. I hope you've got someone to talk to who understands x
