How on earth do the breeders get away with this and why does the Kennel Club endorse it.

The German Shepherd is now a ruined breed, especially the show dogs!!

Just look at how low the back of the dog has become! they were never originally bred to be like this!!!

We actually gasped aloud at the German Shepherd on Crufts last night. Looked awful.
This is why they are so prone to hip problems. It's more about fashion than their wellbeing.
Awful isnt it?

There was a post in the Mail (yes, I know!!) the other day showing dog breeds 'then' and now, none of them were an improvement.
Dreadful isn't it? I always had GSDs, lovely dogs, they certainly didn't look like that!
You can add most of the bull breeds and golden retriever's to that list. I gather that if a dalmatian has too few or too many spots it gets put down at the puppy stage.
I hate Crufts and never watch it and I can't forget the report last year of a dog being beaten by its owner in the car park after the show. I would like to see it banned, but it will never happen, unfortunately. The kennel club has a lot to answer for.
I find it a bit creepy that anyone wants to deform a dog then proudly show off that deformity in public in the hope of being awarded a prize......for deforming a dog better than anyone else......odd isn't it...x
Me too Viv.

None of those people at those shows look like animal lovers, to me their "pets" are their money makers- no more, no less.

melv, I agree, there are a lot of issues with a lot of dog breeds, including my breed of choice being the Irish Wolfhound, fortunately the Wolfhound groups are working very hard to extend the life expectancy of the breed and a new data base has gone live today to assist with this.

It upsets me greatly BOO, dogs should be running and playing in fields and chasing balls not put on display like this for the sake of 'entertainment'.
I know....and the gait was awful in both.
Take a look at these for a contrast...lovely active dogs

I have some friends that have had 2 German Shepherds that had to be put down due to hip dysplasia. Its a ruddy disgrace and its the reason that the BBC stopped showing Crufts a few years ago.

They did this devastating documentary about Crufts and the ruddy KC. I recall the poor spaniel that had a cranium too small for its brain.

I am not sure what the RSPCA's position is on this but I think they should start making some prosecutions.
They might Mikey, if there's money in it for them, or publicity, or better yet, both. If they won't gain either from it, they'll turn a blind eye, like they do most of the time.

Disgraceful charity.
I was truly shocked when I saw the GS's having grown up with them I could not believe the difference.
However, can I just point out that I have several friends that show at crufts and I can assure you that they all adore their dogs and work very hard at animal welfare.
Islay, I'm afraid that doesn't mean they all care just because your friends do, sadly. That poor German Shepherd dog makes me want to weep !
The KC is the villain here. If they stood up and condemned this sort of thing, it would soon change. But of course they won't because they are made up of dog breeders who are making a fortune. Nasty cynical organisation, that has been exposed before. Maybe it needs to be exposed again.
I have watched the link again, and its obvious that at least one of those poor dogs couldn't even walk properly..........this makes me so angry !

That bought back memories. My father was a police dog trainer/handler.I ,as a young kid, would run from the dogs well padded with tractor inner tubes and sacking on my arms or would hide in one of several laundry baskets for tracking displays.
My father won the Police National Dog Championship in 1956 with our Police Dog Joe. He wasn't the prettiest of GSDs ( deformed ear) but the most intelligent creature I have ever come across.
I note both dogs in that clip went for the runners left arm. My father always trained dogs to go for the right arm. More often the villain would be right handed and hold a weapon in that hand.
I had an avatar of my father and Joe in Cyprus for a while whilst serving with 45 Royal Marine Commando
