my dog is 7 a golden retriever..well behaved and he thinks he is human!! well to cut a long story short he had a couple of toilet accidents in the house..so i said he can have the run of the house at bedtime as we used to leave him in the dining room..well this has worked out..as if he wants to go to the loo he will lick me and i get up and loose him out..well 4 nights ago he got me up at 03.00 so i got up and out he went..then he came back in and played with his toys as i didnt go back to bed..he repeated this for the next two nights by this time i was fed up of being woken up..well this morning he did it again so i grudgingly got up cursing ..well he doesnt like cursing!! so today i am shattered and if he dares close his eyes i shall prod him awake..see how he likes it ..by bedtime he will be shattered..hope it works!! i think he has been doing it for company it works..i get up and he gets hands on him...well he hasnt had any hands on him today..he is very crafty and likes his own way..and i would like some sleep..i said to mr m when i am busting a gut doing the house work he will be curled up on his settee snoring..well thats what he thinks..

Aaahh lovely tale (!) mullein!!  He sounds like a right character.  I just hope my little spaniel doesn't read this or he'll be trying that one.

Not sure what to tell you but, assuming there's no physical reason that he needs to 'go' during the night I think the tiring him out sounds like a good idea.  I expect it takes some doing though.  It only takes about 20 mins for my dog to slow down but after a sleep he's raring to go again.  Maybe he's just going through an insecure phase - I think that intelligent dogs do that. Or maybe the changing season is confusing him, I know with dogs I've had their timetable seems to go a bit adrift at this time of year. (So does mine!)

Why are you green again btw?

i am green because mr m picked up a nasty..and it hijacked me!! and i couldnt get rid of it..and i needed to do a shop online so it was quicker to reboot..as the nasty was also stopping me posting,,the dog is looking spaced out ..and its only 10.44 i keep yelling wake up..his eyes look tired as he is a lazy dog and like s lieing around..their is nothing upsetting him he just worked out if he wakes me up he will get attention..he is really deviouse..he probably got bored waiting for morning..the thing is mr m stayed up till 23.45 and he could loose him out later.. i go to bed early as i am tired out by 21.00 ..this morning when i was cursing he didnt want to go out at all..i shouted wake up so loud a while ago he nearly fell off the settee..

i forgot to say he has that degeneration of the spine setting in thats why he made two accidents as he looses control..but he wouldnt have if he could get to me to say..he needed to go to the loo..as he is really clean..my last retriever died of it age 12 i dont think this one will last that long..both his parents were hip and eye tested you just dont have any guarantees..also he cost me allmost 1000 as he is from a leading retriever kennel..that i go to crufts to see win every year..he is lovely to look at its heartbreaking..but we have recently changed his lifestyle a bit ..a shorter walk no hill climbing..no standing on back legs etc etc..he only eats the best chicken grade 1 and james wellbeloved..organic veg and parsley..no chemicals have ever entered his system he is homeopathy reared from birth..you just cant win..i hate it when they die it really upsets me...we massage him every night he loves that...and mr m wipes him down every week with tea tree shampoo have stopped him climbing in the bath..so we keep him clean by wiping and grooming him..oh well regardless he wont be sleeping today and thats a fact..

Oh bless him, poor chap.
My dog has back problems too (he's almost 9) but try telling him not to jump on & off the furniture.  I can't imagine the house without him, he was a 'reject' who'd been passed from pillar to post so when I was offered him I agreed.  I prefer bigger dogs really (my last was a standard poodle, another reject)  but after 7 & half years I've got used to tripping over him!

One of my dogs will not come out for a walk in the morning. She prefers to lie in. Doesn't do much through the day either but come about 9-30  to 10 pm she wakes up. She was like this as a pup. 9pm was her mad time. Sometimes we go to bed about 11pm and she will go and tip her toy box out (its a shoe box really) and find a squeeky toy running up and down the hall. This will last for about 20 min and then she will go to bed. Its no good taking it away because she would not settle and we would be awake even longer. Like you I am not amused when I get up and 6-45 to get ready for work and she is still in bed.
sounds a bit like the problem we were having last winter with our spaniel. She's ex rescue puppy farm and can't go through the night without needing to "go" . I put paper down for her at night for this reason. Suddenly last winter she started waking at 5.30 in the morning(!) so I'd go down and she'd bound round the garden for five minutes like it was the middle of the day, have a handful of food and then after about 10 minutes go back to sleep leaving me tired all day..it made me feel like when my kids were little! I'd wake up about 5 and wait for the barking to start. I suddenly though one day, I'm not doing this anymore and I just ignored her. Luckily she only has a quiet bark and doesn't wake the neighbours! After a while she went back to sleeping until 6.30ish. A bit like kids really, I left her and she decided enough was enough.

robina..he shouldnt be going up the stairs either ..i dont mind if he walks up but he runs sometimes ..no he shouldnt be on the settee either ..but he took one as his bed and never used his dog basket so it would be a nightmare to get him off it..and even worse he sits like a person on it with his arm on the arm gazing out the window..he has been lieing on the floor a bit more with his back resting up the wall..its funny really as i saw his grandad when i bought him and he was 17 what an age for a big dog!!he isnt to bad anyway we are carefull with him...my first retriever was a rescue..he died with a brain tumour the people that had him before me used to beat him round the head..he only lived till he was 6 ..we will be having a small dog next probably a shi tzu like the one on paul o grady show..anyway i will have a dog break when he goes for a while..as he would be hard to replace....i fell asleep myself watching loose women so he has probably had a sleep ..he had better sleep tonight!! and we dont want to play ball at 03.00 or squeek teddys....

sounds like some of these dogs have trained you all well...LOL

Just a thought mullein3...if you keep him awake all day and he IS exhausted at night, he may have another accident, if he is loosing control like you mentioned, he may not be able to wake up and let you know he has to go, he will go all over himself or the area he is in. just wondering.

Let us know if this works for you....

My other dog most nights waits till we get into bed and settle down and then she will come round my side of the bed and make these very quiet growling sounds to be picked up and put at the bottom of the bed. She is very little and doesn't moult so I don.t mind her sleeping there I just wish she wouldn't wait till I am settled. I keep meaning to make a step or something so she can get up by herself. I think I may be a bit too soft.

drgnrdr...hes not that bad..he jarred his leg a few months ago and he had a couple of mild attacks..twice he lost control of his bowels yuk..but apart from the odd stiffness he isnt to bad..he will last a few more years yet...i know what it is this time with my last one it was to late by the time i knew what he had...we are taking extra care of him..we stopped him sleeping upstairs before as he kept throwing toys at us in the night and waking us up..so because he got me up 3 nights he must have thought this is it 03.00 time to wake them up!! how the hell he knows when 03.00 i will never know..if he ever got to the stage when he lost bowel control like messing himself up i would have him put down as he would be mortified to live like that..even my last one didnt get to that stage he just had the odd accident..they just get stiffer and creaky until their back legs cant hold them anymore..this one has huge front legs and chest so i dont expect a long life..anyway he is stalking me now as i threatend to leave him in the dining room for the night..hes spoiled rotton and like s his own way to much..mr m works shifts long ones and he looks half dead from being woken up every day at 03.00..so tonight is his last chance!! he didnt want to go out this morning he just wanted to play..i dont think he wanted to go out the other mornings either he is having a laugh..
