Have any cat lovers on here experienced elderly cats yowling for no apparent reason? I'm certain nothing is wrong with our cat, but she's started yowling loudly after she's eaten and before running upstairs to her bed! It's almost like she's just making sure we're still here.
Yes my wee oldie used to do this, we wondered if it was dementia but the vet said it was because she was going blind and want to ensure that everything was normal! She would wake up in the middle of the night and yowl for now reason - as soon as we talked to her she calmed down.
Take her for a health check just to be on the safe side older cats pick up infections a lot easier than the young ones.
Yes my cat did this. But it was before food I thought asking to be fed by God she could yell. First thing in the morning she howled then at anytime really. Took her to the vet and it was a thyroid problem. She was 17 years old.
Out of the seven cats we have had (since 1990) three exhibited this condition. The vet told us(and it seemed logical) that when older cats yowled it was because they were going deaf.Once they were completely deaf they stopped yowling because they couldn't hear it/anything.
Thanks all. I think I will pay the vet a visit even though it's not that long since she's been there; although in fairness she hadn't begun this yowling then. She does have plenty of love and sleeps on our bed too (I know it's probably wrong but she always has). After eating she gets to the top of the stairs and howls like mad. It's like she's making sure we're either still downstairs or coming to bed! Bless her.
I've got a deaf cat. He yowls at any opportunity...wants food,needs a wee/poop,has done a wee/poop,is heading (charging) downstairs,wants food,has just woken,...anything!
And the vet who says that when the cat is deaf,it will stop howling-he lies. !!! I was told that they howl because they can't hear themselves...
So...maybe she is going deaf and is disorientated.
