I prefer to think it was an act of kindness from a man who thought the world of his dog. There's a lot of them out there (thankfully).

True devotion, it's what we do - Monty made his mark, now his time to rest.x
what a wonderful thing to do!!
I cried when I saw it on Mail Online. True love from that man for his lovely, faithful friend.
I'm sorry, but to me this is a load of sentimental twaddle. The dog doesn't know what's going on. It's all done to make the owner feel good. I don't object to him doing it, but I think it's ridiculous to post it hoping that the world will go "Aaaah".
Sorry, dog lovers everywhere. Maybe if he'd taken a lamb up there just before slaughter and cooking then the sentimantal brigade wouldn't have been so sentimental. Best wishes. :-)
Read this earlier, Tilly.
What a lovely bond.
Rest well sweet Monty.
It's called sharing, Atheist. They will both have shared lots together including many trips up that mountain. This was one last share.

Sharing's nice....and becoming rare it seems.... :-(
gness, if they'd gone up the mountain and the weather had turned bad and if god had boomed down from the clouds, then the man would have reluctantly killed and eaten his dog. The dog wouldn't have known what was coming and wouldn't have been aware of the pain it would have caused his master or itself until the knife struck. I know I'm a sanctimonious prig to a lot here, but I don't like cat or dog lovers who are at the same time oblivious to the other animals that we eat. They don't even see the carcasses, just the plastic wraps over the pink stuff within.
That was a lovely thing to do but I can't help feeling the dog would have been just as happy in his garden, the living room or anywhere else where his owner was. I`m not sure the views would have made him any happier.
Because some sanctimonious fool wants to feel he's a hero, he submits a seriously ill animal to an obviously uncomfortable trundle over bumpy terrain.

And we're meant to admire that ?

What idiocy.
Well maybe I am sentimental but absolutely that dog knew what was going on, at least to the point that his owner was taking him out. It was undoubtedly a very positive experience for both dog and owner. I think you underestimate the intelligence of our pets atheist.
You can't (and shouldn't) humanise animals. People seem to do that a lot these days.
Oh, I can’t read that, I’ll be crying all night . !!!
Of course the dog knew what was going on, a man (or woman) and his dog are deeply attuned to one another and bound by love. He made sure the dog was comfortable with lots of soft blankets. I agree about not 'humanising' them 237SJ, I would NEVER insult my beautiful dog like that !
When my cats can hear a cat basket being really quietly taken down from the top of a wardrobe 4 rooms away and miraculously disappear, sit on a laptop to gain attention, ignore all speech until the word Dreamie is mentioned, know that a strategic claw placed under the duvet into a huìman foot will wake one up and become incredibly affectionate and bothersome if you dare talk on the telephone it suggests to me that they have chosen to humanise themselves:-)
Ah, yours as well Prudie;-)
That's so lovely, something he's familiar with, spending time with his person....
Atheist, that isn't sanctimonious. It's like the odd vegan post we get- it's not inferior or superior morals, just different.
This reminded me of Walnut the whippet a few years ago, and his last walk...

It may be for the owner...or for the dog...or most likely for the last bit of bonding and companionship they will share. Lovely story.
Oh my goodness! My eyes are leaking! Love this for MANY reasons.

We love our dogs and Husb is in remission from Leukaemia and credits wanting to get out of hospital to see his dog as a huge step of beating this!

Prudie, cats are not humanised, they are far smarter than that. The Egyptians used to worship them as Gods and cats have not forgotten that.

My cat makes your average human look daft. He is such a manipulative, devious, lovable rogue.

He treats dogs with contempt. It's v funny.

The world? No. Just those people who have cognitive empathy.
Rest in peace Monty.
