When i was little my mum found a tortoise outside our back gate and so we kept him. We had him for a long while however one day he just went (was gonna say run away but that wouldn't be right!!). Anyway my mum really adored him and she has a special birthday coming up soon of which i'd really like to get her another pet tortoise. I've heard you cant actually buy them legally anymore and i also know you cant import them either however through browsing the net i have found sites that sell hatchlings. I realise these are expensive but i am prepared for that however am not sure how reliable the sites are that i have found. Has anyone purchased a hatchling like this at all and if so could you inform me of any suitable sites??

Hi, a few months ago I got 2 snakes and while looking around, i noticed that shop has small tortoises. I think they were about 150. Not sure where you live but the shop was in Manchester. Surely there are other places that sell them.

We had a pet tortoise when I was a kid too, found it in a grave yard, he did'nt make it through a hard winter one year.

Just a thought, but have you looked into captive bred ones, I know you can get other reptiles and birds that have been raised in this way, maybe you could try 'captive bred tortoise' with your search engine or check with your local pet shop ?

So that's where my Joey went! I looked for him for ages.
Thunderbird, did you leave it outside in the winter?they gointo hibernation around november to march.!
The Tortoise Trust sometimes have older ones that need new homes, you can Google them for details
You're right about it being illegal to import them any more and I believe there is a Tortoise Trust or Society (which goes by a rather grander generic names which I can't remember) who may be able to help you if you can track them down. The local vets in your area might be able to point you to a reliable supplier.

(I inherited one as a ten year old (it was about 40 years old then) and had it for over 40 years until a neighbour's dog broke into our garden, played football with it & broke its shell. Sadly it didn't survive the shock.)

Have you tried this site? British Tortoise Society?
