Do any one agree that the dog training programmes being shown on tv lately should carry a do not try this at home warning,I have been training and working dogs for a number of years gsds and border collies,I went to a house of a new dog owner this week to see her new 10 week puppy she had been shaking a bottle have filled with pepples to correct the puppie when it did something wrong this she had seen on training programmes ,then could not understand why the pup was getting jumpy and scared around noise, when i explained this was to help correct a learnt behaviour in older dogs she under stood the damage she might have done but it makes me wonder what other methods are being picked up from these programmes i will be working with her and the pup from now on and encourge her to go training classes as well
I agree with you god knows what people are doing to young dogs because of what they see, have you thought of writing to some channels like the bbc's 'It's Me Or The Dog' Maybe they could start to use the warnings.
totally agree with you.i have trained dogs for years and i wouldn't use the pebble method on a dog that was any younger than 4 if at all.these programmes are good but they not for have a go at homers. i get worried when folk come to me and say oh they try it on their dogs and can't understand why the results are not the same as the show.my year old collie is trained to perfection and that has taken me ten months of hard work and devotion he is starting agility lessons next week which we are very xcitd about but i know it going to take weeks of work and the end result might be he does it for fun not competing.one episode of that dog borstal had a boxer leaping and bounding over jumps and seesaws within minutes. i wish it was as quick as that but some folk think it is like that and get very annoyed when reality hits.god i best get off my soapbox!!!!
Yes,you are very right! I watched britains worst pet the other night and found the programme absolutely useless but some inexperienced people will try these methods and get things seriously wrong!
Thank you for your replys, i did watch the one programme with the boxer doing agility , hoped they explained its not all about getting a dog to jump over things. when i did agility with collie it took more than a week to get it right months in fact ,like all dog training its a on going commitment and im still learning after all the years ive worked dogs
