Urinary tract probles with cat

Hi there,

I have taken my cat to the vet and he has diagnosed him with urine crystals. My cat is 13 years old and the vet has advised he is put on a special urinary diet to help breakdown the crystals which could cause a blockage and make him very ill.

The food he recommended is Royal Canin Urinary diet food. Now my cat is very fussy and will only eat Go Kat biscuits, I don't want to buy this food and it go to waste.

Can people let me know how their cats get on with it or if there's another food they would recommend using?

havnt had an experience with a cat, but had a fussy dog who had to have a 'special' diet, which proved difficult. Fortunately in the end I found some medication he could have so that he could remain on his normal food, as long as he didnt have too much protein or fat. I would speak to your vet and raise your concerns.

Umm - could it be possible the food is what has caused the crystals? In which case you'd be better of trying the vets recommendation. A bag of food is much cheaper in the long run than more visits to the vet.

Royal Canin special diet foods are excellent - my cat had suspected cystitis and they gave me these biscuits and she did eat them, even tho she's quite a fussy eater. You should also ask the vet about the meat sachet variety tho - it's for the same problem and my cat loved them. I think you get them in a box of 12. They are expensive but you do have to address these crystals and it is quite possible that previous traditional cat food have contributed to them forming. These expensive diet foods are necessary - even tho they are rather harsh on the purse strings. Hope it works out for the kitty - good luck!
