I have had my gold fish now for almost 6 years, living in a bowl in my bedroom....I only expected it to live 1 year...is this normal or should it be dead now?

It certainly is a good feat to keep a goldfish indoors for so long. But as mentioned, goldfish can live for many decades outside.

A mate once won a goldfish at the fair and kept it 18 years in a 2' tank....the fish was nearly 10" !!!!!

Nice one....good to hear a success story....keep doing what you're doing....something must be right.
I'd like to concur with hammerman. It is quite a feat to keep a goldfish alive for 6 years in a bowl. You must be sensitive to your pet's needs. Well done..

that's just it tho....the novelty wore off years ago....I was a lot younger when I got it...It's just not cool now when "friends" come over to have a fish in my room....I wouldn't say that I take specail care of it....I feed it and clean it when it needs, that's all!lol!
Yeah, very unusual for a goldfish to survive in a bowl. Even if well cared for in a tank with filter and water changes it wouldn't be bad going!
