Dobermann & Rottweiler Breeds - bad press?

The last couple of weeks I have notice an influx of dobermanns and rottweilers being sold in the Bristol Trade It paper. Some of them are family pets that are just being discarded - there was a 5 year old dobermann on there today, that was being sold by his owners who had him from a pup - how on earth can they do that? after having him for 5 years and now they want rid of him. I know there may be genuine circumstances behind this, but I am firm believer in a forever home and could not part with any of my animals. I felt so sad for him, there is a photo of him and would have taken him myself but already have 2 dogs - 1 a rescued dobermann that I took on in April after being cruelly abused. These 2 breeds now seem to have had bad press the last few months, do you think this is why so many are now being available?

Its the black and tan syndrome i expect! People will break their necks to get away from them, often with no good reason. Its about education, but sadly some people just dont want to know

Hi riapnash. I too have seen an increase in availability of older dogs of these breeds.
On a similar note, my friend has a Rottweiler X Alsatian and I do not know a better-trained dog. She is controlled, she is well-behaved, she is happy, she does a damn sight more than my dog! Yet people pull their dogs away from her, or allow their dog to yap at her and then get cross when she barks her big booming woof at them...Her partner has a lovely dobermann.

There is so much stigma around these breeds, and it's sad, because they are just lovely dogs if handled correctly.

I hope good dog owners can strengthen and regain the good reputation the bigger breeds could have.

I'm just going to say that my beautiful Dobe, (rescue), just wants to please.
They are such incredibly intelligent dogs.

The reasond behind them rehoming that 5yr old had better be for good reasons. ie: they're both dying. If they haven't put it in their 'ad' and they want money for him instead of a loving people home? then I wish them cruelty....

I would never [now] trust anyone who wants money for an older dog! Surely if you have genuine reasons to re-home your dog you would rather see it go to a good home, than get the asking price for it!!! Some of you may remember that I was willing to pay to re-home a Great Dane pup a while back, I was let down badly by the present owner......I have now seen this pup 'for sale' on three occasions :O{
There is however something you can do to help....phone the ad and give the owner the phone number of the relevant breed rescue.....You'll probably get a mouthfull of abuse.....but also a warm glow knowing you've tried to help.

On the negative side... I got a cross GSD/Lab from a dog pound. He was uncastrated and was 5 years old. With me he was the biggest sappiest beast ever. (He got the op!)

But outside the house he was a monster. I live alone but he would have been dangerous if there had been cats or children. He had been badly treated and was now of the "bite first, think later" mind set.

I had him until he was 14 years old and loved him to bits, but he could have been a great dog.

I like Rottweillers - but I think that people buy them for the wrong reason. They are powerful dogs but a well bred and well 'brought up' rottie could be a great pet.

We live in a throw away society. You get fed up of something you just discard it and buy another one.

They don't hack up hairballs in my bed. They don't come to the loo with me every time I go. They don't..........................................

I know we always do blame the humans with good reasons. I once was at the vet in the 80s when two youngish men were complimenting each other on the way their dog was aggressively behaving. One told other how their dog had to be muzzled to be examined by the Vet. They were proud to have these aggressive animals, not I believe because they loved the dog but it made them look hard.
And not just men, I knew of a women who had two designer dogs, first a Weinerarmer and then a Sh.i.tzu got rid of them because they weed on her designer carpet or some such nonsense, she wanted the accessories - like a dog is a hand bag or a pair of earrings!!

hi, yeah it's awful I know but unfortunately it goes on all the time. people get bored, pressured by work, family etc and i guess they are trying to do the best for him and we can only hope they vet the new house and make sure they'll love him and giv ehim the home he needs.
I have just taken on a 1 year old Bichon Frise, he's very sweet and I can't understand why anyone wouldn't want him, i'm obedience training him and he's coming on in leaps and bounds! it's a sad old world of disposable items now and i guess dogs are just one of those "accessorys" sad to say!

Thanks for all your comments - I guess that some people will have genuine reasons for rehoming due to marriage breakdowns, death in family, change of work, etc. I myself separated from someone a few years back, who wanted to keep the dobermann we had at the time - he worked full time and the dog would have been shut up all day in the house. I kept on that he couldn't look after the dog properly and he eventually relented - it was all down to that fact that he had paid for the dog, bought as a pup and really it was out of spite against me as I had put all the hard work in........ he never really wanted him.
