My friend bought a leather suite and her cat totally ignored it and was not at all tempted to use it as a scratching post.
My two cats are actually really good - they only use the scratching post. My last cat preferred the woodwork.
Good luck to your daughter-in-law.

Thanks for your reply..I have three oldies and they have no interest at all..Only certain wall paper ect and they have a s/post but my daughter in laws next door/n had big problems with her cat who would not leave her settee alone infact she resulted in getting a frabric one because her other was a disgrace,I said why not cover it with a throw whilst the newness wore off the only problem with that is will they play hide and seek under it and scratch in the process....Our darlings can be little devils at times but loved very much all the same..thanks once again.

I have a leather sofa and three kittens, and they have scratched the ends and back of the sofa to bits! We bought them a scratching post which they love and use constantly, but they also scratch the walls and sofas endlessly. when we come to replace the sofa, I will probably buy a fabric one instead, but in the meantime will try what chuffinghell suggests with a citrus spray.
