.....for my hamster. What can I do to make my hamster's diet more healthy? He usually nibbles on some old chestnuts, cornflakes and lots of maltesers and other such sweets .... all of which are bad for him and lead to his bowel problems, (he gets constipated / bloated / grumpy twice a week) ..... and he has also been shedding a lot of fur becoz of it (a lot of it on his poor little head) :(
Please advise, as dopey (my hamster) and I would really appreciate it!
When you say you feed it maltesers, does it have the chocolate too? If you do then as with dogs it can be poisonous for them and could even kill them.
We usually feed our hamster small bits of apple, raisins, blueberry, strawberry, grape, cheese and nuts, but only in tiny amounts and usually three or four times a week.
You can also buy some nice dried treats to be used as a supplement to their usual food from pet shops.
Stick to shop bought hamster food supplemented with a bit of apple or plain human biscuit (digestive). You can buy special hamster treats but they are not necessary if the food is balanced. The hamster food I sell contains dried apple and other fruit.
i have always giving my hamsters ready brek once a week when they are about 18 months old and onwards, i found it on the net once. because i do this my hammys always live past 5 years old. you just mix a tiny amount with water and a tiny weeny sprinkle of sugar, i use a tiny hamsters bowl but it works out tobe about 4-6 tablespoon. put it in the cage in the evening and if they like it the bowl will be empty by the morning. its really good for the oaps of the hammy world
