Whats happened to my dogs claws?

My staffy has just come in from the garden and I noticed his back paw bleeding. On closer inspection I notice one of his claws has been completley ripped off just leaving the pink bit (very sore..ouch!) A lot of the other claws are frayed and split like they've been dragged along concrete. I've heard of animals that have been hit by a car having this but my garden is completely secure so he couldnt have got out. I have some gravel in my garden and a patio and grass but I cant see anything out of place. Hes feeling very sorry for himself but I dont think he needs the vets provided it doesnt become infected I just need some clues as to how he done it so I can make sure it doesnt happen again.

has he jumped off a wall or tried to climb up a fence or something?

My dearly departed old boy used to rip his front claw regularly, and on three occasions ended up at the vets, had his foot bandaged and on anti biotics, all due to playing football with my son, or just from running after a ball over the park. The insurance actually said they wouldnt pay for any more footballing injuries, and so ended his career!

But that was usually just the one paw, or claw, not all four of them.

Thanks I think he must of done it on the fence maybe chasing a cat or squirel. I hope hes learnt his lesson!

Have you got a wall he may have tried to climb? I always have an antibiotic given to my dogs if they tear out a claw, prevention of infection is the safest way I find!
