Help I am dogsitting for someone. Although he is very well behaved, I CANNOT stop him pulling on the lead outside. I have tried standing still until he sits, but the moment I move off - so does he, with a vengence, Apparently he is like this with his owner too. My arms already feel three inches longer. Would appreciate any advice!

If its not your dog, it can be difficult. For our two Labs, we found that a body harness as opposed to a lead on the collar proved helpful. For some reason the dog doesn't feel the need to pull as much - don't ask why!
With Max I used a Halti, which puts the focus of the lead under his chin. he soon learnt and within a fortnight he was walking along perfectly, but as webdude says when its not your dog its hard to do anything positive
I don't like them, but have you tried a choker? If the dog responds, then give him a little treat. Sounds as though he's either not been trained, or hasn't been out enough in the past - just eager to go for a walkies maybe!!
I use a Halti for both of my little pulling machines.

They are knee height (the dogs not the Haltis) and were quite a pain in the backside until I went the Halti route.

They are now 9 years old and I've been using them for about 6 or 7 years with great success!
a naughty tin!
Trying turning round and going in the opposite direction so the dog is behind you and say heel patting your thigh at the same time when the dog complies give lots of praise. It is useful to do this on the garden at first in spells not lasting more than 10 minutes
For a quick fix, hold the lead about half way down in one hand, try looping the rest of the lead around the dogs chest, fairly low down. You need to keep the bit from the collar to your hand loose, so you don't choke the dog, but the bit round the chest taught, and hold the end of the lead in one hand where it joins the bit from the collar, hope this is making sense. The idea is that the dog pulls into the loop round its chest and meets the resistance from the lead.

Its the way we used to stop the greyhounds pulling at the track without making them choke themselves on the lead.
