I was told by a friend that her son's Jack Russell was Pedigreed. I always understood that JR's were not acceptable to the Kennel Club (who I believe control Pedigrees) I have had the pleasure of owning J R's for over 25 years - they are great wee dogs, full of character - my current one will be15 in June and is fit as a fiddle BUT I have never heard of a Pedigreed Jack Russell. Can anyone enlighten me?

No there is no fixed pedigree in a Jack as theres way to many seperate breeds to date (eg) wire haired, soft haired, short haired, and so on i have never heard of a KC that will register a Jack hope this helps
You're right - in the UK the Jack Russell terrier is not a recognised breed. The Parson Russell holds the pedigree and has longer, straighter legs.
It could be FCI registered or Irish Kennel Club registered.

Like these breeders (these are pedigree Jack Russell):

As a dog owner, I,m interested in just what the difference between an "Ordinary" & a "Parson" Jack is. What parameters were used to decide which class a particular line of dogs belongs in? there must be more then the length of a dogs legs.
The Parson Russell Terrier is recognised by the Kennel Club (they were oroginally called Parson Jack RussellTerriers, but the 'Jack' was dropped so they did not become confused with what we all know as Jack Russells, i.e. the shorter legged hunt terriers. Have a look at the breed standard for the Parson Russell:

There is also a registry used by many European/foreign countries called the FCI which is their equivalent of the Kennel Club, and they also register the Jack Russell Terrier, which is based on an Australian standard, but stems originally from the smaller 'hunt terriers' from the UK

There are also clubs in this country which keep records of Jack Russell Terrier pedigrees, but they are not a KC recognised breed, although they do breed them pure.
