Hello all you animal lovers , I need some reassurance please . My son has bought an 8 week old jack russell adorable puppy , he is sat in a cage at the moment as my huge labrador hasn't been introduced yet .
I've fed him and he ate it up . He's wining , think that's how you spell it , and I'm not sure what to do . I am witing til my son gets home til the dogs meet but I don't want to have him upset . xxxx

He is a baby who has just been taken away from his mother and litter, it is not unusual for puppies to cry. He most probably wants to wee or poo!! Can you put the labrador away in another room and play with him a while, then take him outside again for wees?

Apologies if you already know this but he will need to be fed four times a day at that age, I always feed two meat meals and two milky meals, but only small amounts for a JRT.

Personally I would wait a while before you introduce the older dog, a puppy that small can be easily hurt with an adult dog of that size, and I wouldnt leave them unsupervised for some months.

Oh thank you for your reply jules , I've done what you suggested , though they are in seperate rooms already . Little Skippy is now played out and is having a sleep bless him .I took him outside but I think it spooked him . I've put trainer pads on the floor and will try him on them when he wants out again . I won't be leaving them unsupervised as my lab is very gentle but very big . x
Let the lab smell the pup while it is confined in its cage for protection. The lab should see you handling the pup and learn its a new addition to the pack.
Question Author
Yes , I think that's a must , the little one will feel less overwhelmed if he's in the protection of his cage , and it will give my son a bit more control over the dogs if anything untoward should pass between them .
He's just done his bits and is now back in his cage while I have my dinner . Hopefully he will be ok bless him , it must be scary away from his siblings .
AW....bigmamma - you've got a new baby!! How lovely! I guess you're going to be foster mum while your son is away? I expect Porsche will soon get to love the pup, after all, bitches (am I allowed to say that on here?) are usually very good with puppies, even if they've been spayed. My Elsa was spayed when she was young, but all her life has mothered anything small and weak. We had an orphaned lamb that lived in the house for a while and she used to clean him after he'd had a feed (I swear she would have fed him herself, if she could have!) and then whenever I've had a sick chicken and brought it indoors (I usually put them in a box, in front of the Rayburn, to keep them warm), Elsa has always been found curled up next to them. She adores tha cats and is desperate to get to know little Mischa, but Mischa is terrified of her. She'll come round soon. Good luck with pup!! Love, K xxx

Hello Kleiber hun , lovely to see you . Yes , a new baby . He's most adorable , Lots of photos have been taken so I'll get one up on here once I have them on my comp .
I am scared of doing something wrong , it's so long since my lab was that young. He's settled in his cage at the mo with his head on his snuggly . He looks so helpless and to know that he is totally dependant on me tonight is daughnting.
I reckon Porsche will be fine to meet him through the cage and , as you say , bitches can be very caring . When she was down at my sisters a coulple of years ago she looked after my sister patterdale so attentively and took all the neck grabbing and leg grabbing in her stride. xxxxx

We are going to get a vet appointment for him tomorrow if we can for a puppy check , will he be ready for his first vaccs now Kleiber , and , as he hasn't had any yet , should Porsche be allowed near him , or is it ok as he's in her house anyway ? He's 8 weeks and one day today btw ..
I have to admit that JRs are my least favourite breed of dog - but I am still jealous that you have a baby as well as Porsche.

Best wishes on introducing them - I am sure that every thing will be okay.

Question Author
That's ok wolfe , I think most have a least favourite breed , my son took to my sister JR and liked the breeds cheeky personality . I'll let you know if he's among my favourites in a week or so ...lol
aww hi mamma - a new baby in the house eh lol, i dont know about pets but hope he and Porsche get along just fine x
Question Author
Hi weeal , Porsche just had to go out to do her bits and had to pass the cage on her way out , they were fine , she had a tentative sniff at him first and both their tales were wagging , then she dared to go a bit nearer and had a look and a sniff , then a sniff around the room and out to do her bits . Then she came in and went back into the front room as I asked her. Now they're both back asleep xxx
A friend of mine has a JRT, a very spirited little madam, who digs for England. Great escape artists!! Good luck with him, he will soon be putting your older dog in her place.
Question Author
Hee , yes jules , I'm sure he will , though she's so laid back and could sleep for England so I'm hoping he will give her a new lease of life and give her companionship .
My son went for a female but was told that 2 females may argue whereas my female will not challenge the male .
Oh, I am so jealous. I would love another Jack Russell (I have a Jack Russell cross at present and she is just adorable). They are so intelligent and spirited and full of fun - affectionate too. For years I have had larger dogs, but JR's have won my heart now.

Hi Loftylottie , this is the first small dog I've had , which is why I'm a bit worried about the tiny lad . He's had another drink out of his bowl , and peed on my labs bed .....hee....that's now in the washing machine . He's laying on one of his trainer pads at the moment , tryng to chew the long end on his collar . I was playing with a tennis ball and he actually went after it and pawed it along .xxxx
My little JR cross puts my son's girlfriends's big black lab firmly in her place - she is definitely the boss!

Hope you are OK bigmamma. xxxx
Question Author
Aww lofty , sounds like a real character :-) xxx
Small dogs, but generally very big in the brains department bigmamma. Generally very quick to train. They can be snappy, true, but that is often due to lack of training. They need to know who's boss. They also need absolutely loads of exercise to tax them both mentally and physically. The sooner training starts the better!

He will run you ragged bigmamma!!!! You will be super fit!!
Question Author
Ha ha , I don't think I could run anyway let alone ragged , he will get plenty of excercise and , being small , I can take him for walks , but I am so slow and my lab knows my limits . My son will have a big role in his life fortunately so he'll get plenty of activity . xxx
Question Author
Awww , how cute , he was loose in the dining room but has gone into his open cage on his own and gone to sleep :-)
