My mate is getting a Border Terrier pup (female) next week but she can't think of a name for it.
I have told her there are some very intelligent people on here ( with the exception of a few ) that maybe can come up with some ideas so........ I am leaving it to you lot ! I am going to the shop now but will check back later.
Thanks in advance !

The old tip for naming a dog was to always choose a name that began with a hard consonant sound e.g Pippa or Bobby rather than say Harry , Harriet or Anthea (!).The idea is that dogs learn, recognize and respond to the hard sound more easily than a soft one.

Now, that was helpful, wasn't it? LOL Though, come to think of it. Pippa might do (bit Sloaney for a roughy toughy terrier ?).It's difficult without seeing the bitch.Regardless of breed, some individuals have behaviour, manner or personality that suggests one name more than another.

Yeah, I told her she might change her mind when she sees it. The name she chooses may not suit her. I quite like Cassie.
Poppy, but like fredpuli47 said can depend on the dog. when we've had animals in past, we quickly pick out a new name when we get them, not by choice but it just comes to you, they seem to have personalities that suit there names.
Or she could always adopt my late mother's method for a cat.She took one of the farm kittens as a house pet. "What are you going to call it? " we asked "Cat" she replied, adding" Well ,I've only got the one" (Her Irish logic: Therefore it didn't need any name to distinguish it from another house cat. )When the cat had kittens my mother kept one.We asked what she'd call it ." Kitten" she replied, as though our question was daft (obvious really: she had one Cat already but she'd only one kitten) And Cat and Kitten they remained for the rest of their very long lives

How does 'Dog' sound? Ah, she's female.Problem. Naming her Bitch might not be a good idea when it came to calling for her in public: "Bitch! Come here!" Hmm

I love it fredpuli47 !! I absolutely love the Irish way of thinking ! We used to have a labrador called Blackie which wasn't too bad till a black family moved into the village which meant I couldn't shout his name when he ran off lol. My brother had a black rabbit called Snowie and a white cat salled Sooty !
We called our pooch Rosie - however with the latest Corontation Street story lines maybe not...
I have a Bedlington Terrier and she is called Pickles - which suits her character perfectly.

Pickles was my maiden name so even better!!

Are you American Melanie6 ?? They sound quite American names !
What about choosing something appropriate to the Borders?

Kelso?
Most of my animals have been rescued and have already had names. However, I think it's best to wait until they are home with you and somehow suitable names just spring to mind. Hence, a cat called 'Hissy'!!
Sheena.
I have 3 dogs A rottie who is called chelsea after a super footy team
A heinz which is called dotty as she has black spts all over her

An an english bull terrier cross staff who is a brindle colour we called her treacle

I always look at the dog and wait a little while see there personality a bit and if threre are any unusual markings and take it from there I am not really into names for animals tht are people names you got to think what would you like to be shouting in a park.
