We adopted Sally, a beautiful three year old retired greyhound on Saturday. Two days ago, she was playing with her favourite toy (a fluffy, quacking duck) indoors, she then took it outside, had a good sniff around the flowerbed, dug a hole, buried the duck and covered it with earth, using her nose. I've heard of dogs burying bones, but am interested to find know why she would have buried a toy.
She's my first dog, by the way!

I have no idea why she has buried her toy but just wanted to say that it is nice to hear of people getting retired greyhounds - they are lovely dogs and deserve good homes. I hope that you have lots of good times in the future with her.
Its buried 'cause its more than she can eat....so kept it for 'hungry-times'.
'Cos she's slightly quackers!
I'm so glad you've given Sally a good home Wispy. She's absolutely gorgeous & I bet you'll all have lots of happy times with her. -xx-

(P.S. Dad reckons Sally buried the duck to store it for Boxing Day)! ;o}
Is that a hint about who's cooking for who on Boxing day lol
Maybe she thought it was a dead duck
How sweet. It's totally normal for dogs to bury all sorts of things - she just doesn't want anybody else to have it!
have you tried playing with the duck with her wispy? dogs do this when they are feeling a bit over possessive with belongings, she is burying it to keep you away from it, if you dig it up she will bury it again.

dogs do this with bones as well, she obviously really loves this duck
it wants a fluffy hare instead

it been chasing one half its life and never caught it
Abit of flufff ya say dusty ???

Welll dont we all ?

And here I was thinking that was a euphemism, similar to "the rabbit died". I was hoping for some pups. Never mind, it doesn't seem like too odd behaviour to me. Just hope she doesn't forget that/where she buried it.
Wispy won't mind me saying, but they only bought Sally (her name came with her), the brand new fluffy quacking duck from Pets at Home, two days after aquiring her! It made us all laugh watching her race round the garden with it in her mouth - then she goes & buries it! She is so friendly & very docile. She has her own armchair, covered with dog blanket, & is a real couch potato!

Christmas & Boxing day dinners are always a joint affair Dot! I expect they'll spoil Sally with her own special dinners though, as she's underweight poor thing & they're trying to fatten her up.
P.S. I met Sally for the first time on Monday & she made friends with me straight away.

I sat down on 'her' chair & she put her paw on my arm. I bawled my eyes out as she looked at me with her big brown sad eyes - she reminded me of my Mum & Dad's dog when I was little.

Thank you very much for all of your replies. Sally still hasn't dug the duck up yet, so I'm going to remind her where it is later and see what she does, but at the moment, she's all warm and cosy, sleeping on the armchair with her fleece blankets, so probably won't be moving for a few hours!!!
Thank you, blackcat, they certainly do deserve good homes after all that many of them go through. Sally's really settling in well and is trusting us more and more every day. She seems really happy to be here.
Thank you smudge, I could tell that you loved Sally as soon as you met her and she really loved all the fuss you gave her!
Thank you, also for the funny replies, which did make me chuckle!
