I've never had a pet before but having moved to a new place I would really like to have a fish but am only interested in one that would live in a fish bowl as opposed to a tank or aquarium, I'd like as much advice and info before getting one as I've no experience n would hate to get it wrong! What sort of fish can live in a bowl and how many? What do I need for the water? What needs to be in the bowl? Are there any websites that are best equipped to help? Thanks in advance
Goldfish are pretty hardy - if you get a healthy one - sickly ones usually die in a few days - they can live for ages.
I have one who is ten - he did have a companion who passed away and I haven't replaced it because previous experience has shown that the dominant fish will be happy with a fish he has grown up with, but will harry and chase a newcomer, even to the point where it dies of stress.
Hate to do this, but I disagree with andy there. Please don't get a goldfish. They need far more room than a crappy old bowl to give them any quality of life.
It infuriates me to see goldies in a little bowl, and despite what you may think goldies, indeed any fish, require far more care and atention than you'd think.
I'm sorry but a fish wouldn't live very long in a bowl, there isn't enough oxygen and the small amount of water very quickly becomes toxic and will kill the fish. You either need a proper fish tank with filtration or to forget the idea of owning a fish. The days of a fish bowl on a windowsill are long gone and fish are living longer and better lives.
