My dog got bit on the leg by another dog (staff) today

Today my husband was walking my dog and a staff stormed out of it's house and bit my dog in the leg. The owner of the staff came and took his dog and put him in his house and asked if my dog was ok, my dog was bleeding and was obviously terrified my dog not once retaliated just lay there and took it. Now my dog who is called Jack is a black Lab X border collie. The bleeding has now stopped but he is limping i'm very worried about my baby he is only 9 months old. The other person says their staff has had all jabs and my dog definately has, anybody experienced the same type of thing?

your poor dog must have been terrified. we had a similar incident about five years ago & he was only about 20 months old at the time. We have a westie/yorkie cross & there was this bloke with a large xbreed off its lead & when it saw our dog it came charging over, jumping up at me in an aggresive manner & trying to lunge at our one. It took no notice of calling/shouting that the owner was doing. Baz was left with a cut back leg and so visibly distressed. It took him ages to get used to dogs that were bigger than him & used to shake everytime one came close. The owner of the dog in question just didn't hang around to see if ours was ok. It was a public "cut through" green area so he could have come from anywhere. We never saw him again. I think if your dog is still limping tomorrow I would see the vet & take the bill round to the owner. I do hope Jack will be ok. post back to let me know. xx

talk to the owner - he/she may be very happy to accommodate your vet bills and may well be horrified that their dog has done this - therefore they may take all the necessary precautions to avoid a further occurance- the dilemma here is - what if this happens again - the staffi owner has a duty of care not to let his/her dog cause injury to others. Am not a legal advisor but have a million years experience with animals and their owners. Hope this gets resloved amicably

Hi, i will take my dog to the vets tomorrow if he is still limping i do not know where this other person lives unfortunately to send them any bills :-(

When you took baz to vets with his back leg cut what did the vet say and did he get a limp? how long untill he got back to normal? My husband walked back round where he went but can't remember which one it was!!!!!!

hi again. The vet just made sure the wound was clean & yes, he did limp certainly for a day. he soon got better but emotionally it did take him ages when meetting big dogs. It might be worth you or your husband popping round that road again in the next few days to see if you can spot the owner. I mean, next time it could be a child, god forbid. Let me know how you get on at the vets tomorrow. take care x

just to add, there may be someone else along the road who knows of where that Staffi lives so could be worth asking if you see any other people mooching about

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. We have three Staffies, and although they're fabulous with people, they're renowned for not tolerating other dogs very well - in particular if the other animals bark first or strain on the lead, as Staffies are fiercely protective of their "own patch" and see this as threatening. We always have ours muzzled when they're taken out, although they're big softies. They're also up to date with injections, and chipped - but - not so long ago, our oldest one got out. Someone'd left not 1, but 3 gates open, and he got into a fight with a labrador. Neither animal was hurt, I'm pleased to say, but I offered to pay for any vet's bill for the other owner to have her pet checked over. We also contacted the police ourselves & explained what'd happened. We were paid a visit, and the officer concerned was licked to death by my dogs & no action was taken at all, because, as he said, it was an accident. However, we, as dog owners have a duty to ensure that as many precautions as possible are taken. I was just as upset as the other owner was, but sadly, not everyone's the same. I hope that your dog soon recovers, which I'm sure he will. x

My partner's mum had 3 Staffs, but now has two. The bitch, who has since had to be put down, was very strange, every couple of months, she would start a fight between the two dogs and walk away to let them carry on. I suppose she was showing them who was Top Dog.

Now she is no longer around, the two remaining dogs are much calmer and happily snuggle up together. But I would agree, they really aren't that keen on other dogs outside the home.

Try to get your dog to the vet ASAP, dogs have a lot of bacteria in their mouths and a dog bite can cause serious infection as a friend of mine found out when her greyhound got bitten on the leg by another dog,as the wound was very small she just bathed it with salt water, the next morning her leg had swollen to twice it's size so she rushed her to the vets who gave her a jab and a course of antibiotics but after a week it got worse and she ended up losing her leg. I'm not saying this happens to every dog that gets bitten but better to be safe than sorry.

Quick update about Jack, he is obviously feeling very sorry for himself, he keeps giving me "those eyes". His limp is going away and the lump around his sore is getting smaller i think he's going to be OK

I would get the vet to give him a course of antibiotics as dog bites usually cause infection under the skin. If it heals over and the infection is inside it will swell up and need even more treatment.

Not sure of the relevant of both dogs having all their jabs - there is nothing a dog can catch from a bite that is innoculated against.

Agree with you Lankeela,it's nothing to do with inoculations it's the bacteria in their mouths that cause the infection.

Yes i am he is booked in for tomorrow as they had no slots available today so fingers crossed he'll be fine..... i really dislike staffs now my poor baby is such a softy and if you know his type of breed you'll know he is very very obidient.....i did go to the other person's house today my friend actually knew the person and he said that he was sorry and hopes my dog is ok kept telling me he would be but also tried to imply that my dog was fighting too which i'm sorry but he is sadly mistaken my dog was sat at the side of my husband on his lead when he was attacked and he actually ripped his head out of his collar to get away but lay down in the middle of the road and just took this horrible incident from this vicious little beast. The other dogs owner was very defensive and made out that his dog had done nothing wrong and that his dog was an angel but then said that his dog does not like other dogs at all....what am i to do now?????? He said to me "it's ok i know where you live" really really nasty the way he said it. I'm actually afraid of this man. i just don't know what to do??? help please

how did the trip to the vets go? hope Jack is ok. not sure what you could do regarding his remarks. Doesn't sound like a nice person to me. Do you know if there has been any other people making complaints about this dog? I hope all is well

I would get in touch with your local dog warden. They will almost certainly know how best to handle this situation and will probably deal with it in total confidentiality.

They will also be aware of any other attacks by this dog and any other problems with the owner (they are in contact with the police on a regular basis).

They really are the best people to deal with this, you can contact them through your local Environmental Health Dept. at the council.
