Kitten loves to lick his tail

I have a 10 week old kitten who loves licking and cleaning his tail at the end. It is always soggy and smells of cheese because he keeps it so wet! There isnt anything wrong with the skin and he doesnt have mites or fleas.
Ive read up on it and all i can find is that some cats do this as a comfort thing much the same as babies suck their thumbs. But im worried he will make it sore.
Any advice on how to make him do this less.
He is a happy healthy clean chap apart from this

Could you try rubbing orange peel on it? Many cats (but not all) dont like the smell or taste of citrus.
